    sea anemone in tidal pool

We spent hours one day climbing over the rocks in more deserted southerly part of Long Beach looking at all the marine life captured in the tidal pools left when the tide retreated. There were all sorts of crabs, anenomes, starfish and of course little fish of all kinds.

Hiking to Frank Island at low tide

Frank Island is located outside Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay. It's connected by a sandspit to the beach only at low tide. You can walk to the island at low tide, but not supposed to get on the island because it's privately owned. There are cabins and studios for rent on the island. Rates start from $150 per night.

    Chesterman Beach at Low Tide

Check the tide book and visit Chesterman Beach at low tide. When the tide retreats, the beach doubles in size. The newly exposed beach is flat like a mirror reflecting the sky. Lots of people walk their dogs here. I hope the tide will clean up afterwards.

sharing lunch with the guide dog

A unique hike in that it was led by a black lab named Ebie. Our real guide took a nap in the boat and commanded Ebie to take us to the Hot Springs. Immediately Ebie set out on the trail and scouted ahead for bears. Every two or three minutes she would race back wagging to make sure we hadn't strayed. Sure enough we got to the springs without becoming lost or becoming bear lunch.

    sea lion enjoying the sun

There are whales, orcas and sea lions just a few miles offshore. But you will never see them unless you arrange for a boat to take you out a bit. After you see the marine wildlife, a cruise around Meares Island is fun and certain to offer many views of soaring eagles.

During the afternoon at low tide the water recedes making it possible to walk between some of the islands. This was taken from Meares island looking across the sandspit to another, smaller island

    Sun on Long Beach

In the summer, go to Long Beach first thing in the morning. It is often very foggy, but it is a spectacular sight to be there when the fog lifts and the sunshine sweeps across the beach.

A natural hot springs combined with the lapping briny waters of Clayoquot Sound make for an ideal bath. Mix in the fjord-like scenery and it is one superb excursion.
