    city beach

by trickydick Written Mar 29, 2006

Favorite thing: there are better beaches, and FAR better places to swim, but english bay is a great neighbourhood on the downtown penisula that is full of people, close to cafes and restaurants, and just a wonderful place to hang out,or bike, rollerblade, etc
right next to the entrance to Stanley Park, surrounded by a very densely populated residential area.

    English Bay Beach

Fondest memory: The beach on the western part of downtown Vancouver overlooking English Bay is an excellent place to take an evening stroll and watch the sunset. This area also has numerous excellent restaurants and shopping opportunities. This beach goes all the way from the edge of Stanley Park to where you can take the False Creek Ferries to Granville Island. Very nice place to enjoy and relax.

    People sunbathing at English Bay

Favorite thing: I would say that the most popular beach in downtown Vancouver is English Bay. People gather here to watch the sunset, have picnics, swim, rollerblade, suntan, watch live musicians and entertainment, watch the fireworks during the Celebration of Fire fireworks competition every July & August, or just to hang out. To the right you can see the entrance to Stanley Park, and in the distance are the local mountains Vancouver is so famous for.

An April sunset at English Bay, Vancouver

Favorite thing: Back in April 2002 I joined my boyfriend for a walk along the seawall to English Bay. It was a gorgeous day for our typically wet April, and we took advantage of the sunshine. During our time on the beach, the sun started to set and I luckily had my camera in hand. If you're going to be travelling to Vancouver, you *have* to catch a sunset on one of the city's beaches. The sunsets here move in slow motion and last a long time. They're more dramatic in the summer, but you'll still get beauties like this one in the picture!

Favorite thing: Stroll along English Bay - the downtown beach. Rollerblade around Stanley Park. Be hip and cool down at Kittsalano Beach. Get to Wreck (UBC) Beach - the nude one! (you know what to do!!) Play volleyball at Jericho Beach.

Ski at Whistler or Snowboard at Cypress, do the Grouse Grind (leisure types will prefer the SkyRide), peer down from Capillano Bridge, hang around the Art Museum, watch ships come in at Harbourfront (steer clear of Gastown), take a water taxi (ferry) to shop for trinkets on Granville Island.

Go dancing, enjoy dinner, smoke a joint, have a drink....this city has it all!

Fondest memory: See above. Sooo much to do - sooo much to miss!!

Favorite thing: Come down to English Bay. The following intro I copied from http://www.englishbay.com/eb/eb.htm
For those new to the area, let's get you acquainted with the place...

English Bay is an eclectic community located in the West End portion of Vancouver's downtown core. Its main thoroughfares, Denman and Davie Streets, are lively, vibrant and decidedly upbeat. They cut through an area that manages to be one of the most densely populated districts in Canada, and yet, there's a certain calming presence about the place - it's easy to find yourself strolling along one of its quiet, tree-lined streets following the fragrance of the sea down to its expansive beach or sipping a cappuccino as you watch the world go by......
check out the website for more details.

Fondest memory: Four years ago, me and my friend first came here for visit. We love Vancouver and Victoria! We had sooo much fun in our short 5 days trip. We visited many cool places during the time. We like English Bay area in particular. Who would have thought?! Me and my husband moved here from Bermuda last year. And we live right by English Bay:-)

Favorite thing: Visit English Bay. It can get crowded, but the view is well worth it. There is a lot to see and do at this beach that is right downtown! A great way to enjoy is to bike around the seawall and take a rest at the beach. Just follow everyone else riding to get there! If biking is not your thing, take a walk down Denman or Davie Street and enjoy the atmosphere. The beach resides at the corner of those 2 streets.
