The Commodore Ballroom: Oktoberfest at the Commodore

    by Elli99fh Updated Apr 4, 2011

I really didn't know what to expect from the House of Blues' Oktoberfest at the Commodore. It ended up being a lot of fun! It was a very mixed crowd, from the ages of 19 to 80 and everything in between. There was a lot of traditional German music with some contemporary music. The dancing started out slow, but as the beer flowed freely soon the dance floor was packed. There was a dance troupe called the Eidelweiss Dancers - they were great dancers, funny and entertaining. Jerry Wennes and the Happy Wanderers played. Some of them were very old, but put on one heck of a show. We had a great time. Note to self: by next October, learn how to polka and waltz.
The Commodore hosts many modern shows, rock bands, etc. It would be a great place to see any band -- intimate, with high ceilings.

Dress Code: If you want to be cool, dress German-like. Other than that, no dress code I could see.

    The Commodore Ballroom

One of the oldest, and most famous concert halls in downtown Vancouver is the Commodore Ballroom. Recently renovated, it's once again a great place to see your favourite band. I saw the Matthew Good band here a few years ago, and it was a great show.

Dress Code: No sneakers. Wear some nice jeans or pants.

This is Vancouver's most popular concert venue - and it only holds about 1000 people. The Commodore was built in the 1920's and exists today as one of the oldest small venues in the city. The hard wooden dance floor was built above a layer of horsehair and tires so that the floor would bounce and and flow with the dancers' every step.

The Commodore has been providing a venue for legendary acts. Almost every band has played at the Commodore during the infancy of their career. Bands like U2, The Police, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, and more. And when the goth, synth-pop, grunge and rock bands of the 80's and 90's played at the Commodore, the audience would mosh and sway to the music as the floor would bounce like a trampoline!

In the late 90's, the Commodore was shut down, uncertain of its future. It was later reopened in 1999, completely renovated with its historic architecture and bouncing wooden dancefloor still in tact!

If a band that you know of is playing at the Commodore while you're in Vancouver, to be blunt, you'd be stupid not to go! ;) Recent acts at the Commodore include Paul Oakenfold, Doves, The Strokes, DJ Tiesto, Neil Finn, The White Stripes, Matthew Good, Travis, Hot Hot Heat, Slayer, Neko Case, Ladytron, Snoop Dogg, The Wallflowers, Morcheeba, Danzig, Youssou N'Dour and 3 Doors Down. Gives you an idea of the kind of shows you're likely to see there. As I said before, if you're in town and a band you like is playing there - go! :)

Dress Code: It varies on the event. Vancouver is very casual... and jeans/t-shirts are common for concerts... however, on Tuesday nights for the Commodore's famous Disco nights, a disco-themed costume is usually expected.

The Commodore Ballroom is a beautifully rstored old venue right in the city centre on Granville Street. You can go here for cool concerts or thumping theme nights. I was there for a 70's-style evening and had a real good time!

The place is big but not overwhelming and the old dancefloor is beautiful. I've been told it's a bit bouncy to give a special feeling while dancing - it sure is a good place to do so!

Nice big place that has lots of room to dance and mingle !! A couple massive and well placed bars, free coat check and fun crowd make this one of the best places to go in town !!! Disco Tuesdays are especially huge.... 'keep that funk alive' - as in Dr. Funk that iz...heh. It may not look like much on the outside but the inside is pretty nice. You'll find your usual assortment of music here ~ mostly top 40 i guess. This venue also has lotz of concertz ~ boo hoo.... i missed the free Avril Lavigne one....... =( .... and hosts some film-wrap parties as well. Lots of fun !!! Get together a bunch of friends and bust a move.... ~.~

Dress Code: Dress code is totally cas here, there will be peeps that are totally all decked out and stuff - but a lot are just rockin' casual urban gear or are somewhere in between.

It's a huge ballroom with fancy lighting and a gigundo dance floor. Most of the time there's concerts but on Tuesdays they have disco night, etc.

Dress Code: People in Vancouver rarely dress up, you will feel like someone is going to shoot you if you're not wearing an article of clothing by Mountain Equipment Co-op.

This is just a GREAT place! The Commodore is known mostly for being a concert venue, and what great shows they put on there! I've seen great bands such as the Stereophonics and Matthew Good Band, as well as almost getting into David Gray [I had a ticket, my friend didn't--had to sell my ticket:(]. Anways, the Commodore is such a great place, even if you don't find a show that interests you, Tuesday night they put on an infamous disco party. Dress the part and you are guranteed to pass the line....The picture I've placed is from one of their flyers--I hope they don't mind me using it, but I think they would appreciate the promotion. And hey, don't we all deserve a little Rick James in our lives??

Dress Code: Whatever you want for the shows. Try to dress as funky as you can on Tuesdys to get past the lines.

One of the best places in the world to see a live band. Great acoustics and decor recently refurbished. Everyone cool has played here at one time or another. Holds about 1000 people. Large wood sprung dancefloor. Great sightlines from the seats. Disco Night on Tuesdays is the best in the city - people dress up in their best disco duds to beat the line up

by mbsimjam Updated Apr 4, 2011

Commodore is a fabulous place to see a band play, and they usually have some amazing acts that come through there. It isn't open nightly, but they have acts through there so regularly, that it is open a good chunk of the week.

Acts such as Weezer, Ben Harper, Tom Waits, Moby, I Mother Earth, and so many more take the stage there.

Check out their upcoming concerts at the website.

    Dress Code: not an issue.

  • The Commodore Ballroom: What a room!!!

by australiabound Updated Apr 4, 2011

The legendary Commodore Ballroom has been a mainstay for Vancouver concerts for years. It underwent a renovations in 1998 (or thereabouts) and is simply an unbelievable room. It is by far the best place to see a concert in Vancouver.
