Are you into the resurrected mod scene? You know... Brit-pop, 60's soul, with splashes of indie rock and 80's pop? Welcome to the Mod Club - a regular event on Friday nights held at the Honey Lounge at the Lotus Hotel. This is one of the hottest Friday night events happening in Vancouver.
If you can enjoy a set that includes the Rolling Stones, the White Stripes, Metric, Blur, the Smiths, Pulp, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, the Clash, Interpol, Depeche Mode, Suede, Nancy Sinatra, James Brown, Supergrass, and Franz Ferdinand, you'll find yourself at home here. If you enjoy dancing all night, or drinking beer and cheap martinis, the Mod Club may be your night.
Located on the ground floor of the Lotus Hotel's Honey Lounge, Friday nights turn this usually chill lounge into a happening rock n roll club. There are places to chill out and rest, like the oversized booths and couches, however they turn a good portion of the lounge into a dance floor where everyone goes crazy to their favourite rock songs. It's often really busy and the dance floor is packed. There's a really good vibe about this place. It's less of a meat market, and more of a place where people come to have a great time.
Note that the Lotus Hotel also has a separate club downstairs in the basement which is known simply as "The Lotus". Honey Lounge hosts the Mod Club, but the Lotus hosts more electronic drum & bass events. They're in the same building but are two completely separate events. Don't get the two mixed up!
Dress Code:
No real dress code, it's casual, but a lot of people wear the typical indie rock/ British-influenced, 80's resurrection mod outfits. Think "scenester".
Lots of hipster fun here. The DJ spins Mo-Town - R&B classics with EMO pop rock like the Strokes & Bloc Party. There is a $7 cover and drinks around $5. The inside reminded me of the Brothel in the Movie Easy Rider. Ornate chandeliers and antiquities mixed with Modern Retro posters and decor.
The age range is pretty mixed and dancing is favored by a lot of the guests. The enviroment is really friendly and not so aggressive.
There is another club called The Lotus downstairs that plays Techno. It is not associated with this club so you have to pay a seperate cover if you want to go inside. Both of these places are part of the Lotus Hotel.
Dress Code:
Most people dress trendy and hip but there is really no dress code.
The incredible talents of Lori-Loo, Lady Malificent, Contrasoma, and R-Lex brings you some incredible deliveries of New Wave, Classic Alternative, Electro, World, Roots-Rock, and Ambient tunes to lure your curiousity in this very hospitable club known as "Honey". Good drinks, Good seating, Good staff, and Great DJ's ... Every Wednesday. You know where you should be. Dance floor could be bigger, but the ability to carry on some conversations and socializing makes up for the latter. I give the night a 4 stars for the location, and a 5 stars for the music. (out of 5). Visited on 10/12/2005.
