The Jug Island Beach Trail is recommended. It's a beautiful hike at Belcarra Regional Park. The trail is about 5km return begins beside the covered picnic shelter in the heart of the park. Much of the way along the trail is either up or downhill, with a series of wooden staircases for assistance in the steepest sections. The trail leads you through a lush green forest.

There are not many views along the way, there is a branch of the trail that leads out to an opening beside Bedwell Bay. From here you look east to the slopes of Eagle Ridge and the broad flank of Coquitlam Mountain. Depending on your pace it will take you between 45 minutes to over an hour to reach the beautiful cobble-and-sand Jug Island Beach from the Belcarra picnic grounds. Jug Island actually lies offshore at the north end of a narrow peninsula.

The views from this secluded beach are beautiful. It's a perfect location for a picnic or just to relax on the beach and enjoy the beautiful views.

Belcarra Regional Park and Buntzen Lake Recreation Area are both located directly across Burrard Inlet from Barnet Marine Park in Port Moody. In hot months the beaches at Belcarra's Sasamat Lake and at nearby Buntzen Lake are so popular that park information signs will tell you if Belcarra and Buntzen are full. You can probably sense this on a hot day before you even leave the house.

Belcarra has a tradition of being a summer picnic destination. Boats once brought day trippers from Vancouver's Coal Harbour to Belcarra for the day. Belcarra's picnic area has reservable picnic shelters and even a reservable wharf. Call (604) 432-6352 for more information.

There are several hiking trails here that are definitely worth hiking:
*The Sasamat Lake Loop Trail (easy; 1.5 miles/2.5 km return)
*Admiralty Point Trail (easy; 3 miles/5 km return)
*Cod Rock Trail (moderate; 4 miles/7 km return)
*Jug Island Trail (moderate; 3 miles/5 km return)

Belcarra Regional Park: Admiralty Point Trail in Belcarra Regional Park

Admiralty Point Trail is located in Belcarra Regional Park in Belcarra. This park offers great hiking opportunities. This trail is about 2.5 km (1 1/2 mile) with an elevation gain of about 100m (330ft). The time for this hike is about 2 hours (there and back). Take your time to explore all the stops along the way.

The start of the trail is at the south end of the parking lot. A gentle incline up the hill brings you up above the beach at Belcarra. Your first stop is Cod Rock 15 minutes in and to your right. From here you can look back at Deep Cove, see kayakers passing, and maybe get a glimpse of a harbour seal playing in the water. Maple Beach is just ahead, a lovely stop to enjoy for a moment.

Next stop is Whiteshell Beach, a great place to do some beachcombing . Here you can find clam shells galore , star fishes, small crabs and tide pools to explore. Half an hour into the trail should bring you to Admiralty Point. There is a sign that directs you to take a right turn with a short walk down to the water.

This is a good place to soak up the sun and have some good views of the inlet. Cates Park is across from you and Barnett Marine Park is to your left. Here too you have a small beach and rocky shoreline to explore. On a clear day you can see the Second Narrows Bridge and downtown Vancouver in the distance.

Pick up the trail once again to go back or continue on to Burns Point. This is another half hour away. The interesting part of this trail as it winds along the shore are, a few remnants of old houses, where only a few bricks and flowers remain.

Burns Point will give you a view of the inlet all the way up to Port Moody and is directly across from Barnett Marine Park. Extreme care should be taken here and do not get too close to the edge of the cliffs as there is a steep drop off. From this vantage point you can watch the traffic from the marina, see eagles and seagulls looking for food and wave to the Tugs that travel the inlet.

Just a little further than the Cod Rock is a short trail that leads to Maple Beach, a lovely beach with some beautiful views over the Burrard inlet. Definitely worth a stop and maybe even to have a picnic.

Keep on walking from Maple Beach until you come to a trail junction. One short trail leads to the Admiralty Point Viewpoint. And the other longer trail leads to Burns Point.

The best thing to do is to go to the Admiralty Point Viewpoint and enjoy the views, take a rest, have a picnic,... The views are beautiful!

From here you can go on to Burns Point or turn around and go back to the parking lot.

Once you are walking along the trail for about 15-20 minutes there is a stop called Cod Rock. From here you can look back at Deep Cove, see kayakers passing, and maybe get a glimpse of a harbour seal playing in the water.

There is a little walkway that will lead to this point on the trail to your right. You can sit down on the rock and relax for a moment.

Once you have seen Admiralty Point you can go back to the parking lot or continue to Burns point which about another half an hour. Burns Point will give you a view of the inlet all the way up to Port Moody. This is a nice place to relax for awhile, have a picnic or just to enjoy the views.

Be careful here as the rocks are slippery and high up from the water!
