Favorite Dish: I was introduced to this place by a visiting friend, who was in town for a few weeks in the summer. We both had bowls of Vera's Chili, and I've been hooked since.
I've been back on a number of occasions now, and everytime, I'm very satisfied.
Vera's Burger Shack flies in the face of every health food movement that's ever been conceived. Considering Vancouver's stereotypical healthy lifestyle, it's a wonder Vera's survives. We're talkin' old-style burgers, extra meat, extra grease, extra extra extra.
Of course you can choose a veggie burger, but why bother? This kind of food is slathered in everything. Eat it on your cheat day and enjoy the sin of it all. Grab a thick, hand-malted milkshake and throw in an extra order of chili cheese fries while you're at it.
You can see what I mean from their slogan: "You can't beat Vera's meat." The Shack is about as health-conscious as it is PC.
The closest I come to health when I hit Vera's? I spend the extra two bucks for organic beef.
Locations are all great, and the size of each is best described as cozy. Either hit the one at the entrance to the ritzy Kitsilano -- so you can have your burger after a lazy walk along Kits Beach or prior to a stroll to Bard on the Beach, our summer Shakespeare festival, at Vanier Park -- or check out either of the downtown locations, one on rainbow-friendly Davie Street, the other a block from English Bay on Denman.
Favorite Dish: A lot of folks sweat by the Doug Special -- open-faced, with double meat, double cheese, double fried onions, and a double scoop of chili -- which was "named after one of Vancouver's Finest." If this was his 'usual,' I suspect the burger was named for him posthumously. It's good but -- well, wowsers.
Me? I order an organic burger with mushrooms, roasted garlic and Mediterranean Mix (black olives, feta cheese and sundried tomatoes). Needless to say my girlfriend doesn't care for Vera's much, although she did like the poutine -- if the burger doesn't give you an instant heart attack, this version of the French fries, cheese curd and gravy will make mincemeat of each ventricle before you're through.
Vera's is home to the best burgers in town. They have 4 locations around Van however it was the Kits branch that I went to. Burgers are cooked while you wait so be prepared to hang around for a while if its busy. There is limited seating inside or outside the shop but in the summer I guess you could just eat on the beach.
The burgers are excellent and their menu is huge with specialities and all sorts of sauces. You probably won't need to eat anything else after a burger here but they sell chips and other side orders such as chilli etc. The burgers are huge and start from around $5 going upto around $9 for the biggest ones which to be honest with you I don't think I could eat in one sitting.
