    Vancouver Museum

The Vancouver Museum, which is located in the same building as the HR Macmillan Space Centre, is an excellent museum that walks you through the history of the city of Vancouver and the area around it. You can learn about the people who built the city as well as native inhabitants of the area. There's also a special exhibit right now on the Sasquatch! I recommend this museum. The admission for adults is $10. See their web site for more information.

    Vancouver, H. R. Macmillan Space

If you are travelling with kids, you can have a stay in the H. R. Macmillan Space Center. There kids can get in touch with different aspects of space flight, like biological effects on the body and physical concepts. I can only recommend it for travelling with kids!

We left this until the morning of our departure and that was a BIG mistake. They only caterer for 1st and 2nd graders in the morning, the adult program does not start until 2.30pm. They should advertise this on their website so people can plan accordingly. Very disappointed.

    The Planetarium!

    Students outside the Planetarium

While it was renamed the HR MacMillan Space Centre years ago, most locals will still refer to it as the Planetarium, as it used to be called. This is a fun, albeit tiny, educational science museum on all things space. The main exhibit is held on the main floor, where families can go through and learn about NASA, how people live in space, what Canadians contribute to space exploration, and other interesting things. You can touch a real moon rock, play space-related computer games, but my favourite is taking the Voyage to Mars simulator ride!

Upstairs in the main circular theatre are the planetarium star shows and laser shows. They are often open in the afternoon for school events and the general public, although the laser shows remain open later where the lazers are timed to popular music, such as the Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, etc.

Outside the main building is the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory. It has a half metre Cassegrain telescope and holds public viewings on Friday and Saturday nights by donation.

While I wouldn't say the Space Center is a "must see" if you're on a short time frame, if you're looking for something to do in Vancouver on a rainy day and you're somewhat geeky like me and you love astronomy, I would definitely consider this an option! Kids would love this place and teens and adults would enjoy it as well, but especially so if they already have an interest in space exploration. We all know astronomy rocks! :)

    HR MacMillan Planetarium

Visitors to Vancouver should check out HR MacMillan Space Center where you can travel the galaxy with laser and astronomy shows projected onto the 20-meter planetarium dome. There are all sorts of other programs, both educational and entertaining, including an observatory and simulator. At the moment the Planetarium is offering Mars Rover Updates.

The Pacific Space Centre (front), located in the beachfront district of Kitsilano, includes a planetarium and observatory.
