Smiling and Eating are the keys to a good Vaisakhi

One of the best things about Vaisakhi is the food. Every Punjabi restaurant and HOUSE along Main Street offers free food to passersby. I rolled my way along Main sampling untold varieties of curried chick peas, pakoras, samosas, Kashmiri chai, and other delights. Little kids shoved bags of candy into my hands, not the other way around!

Vancouver has a large Sikh population and Vaisakhi is the day they let their hair down, so to speak. Actually, they merely change the colour of turban to orange. They jam the streets, dancing and drumming. A massive parade flows from the Ross Street Temple, down Marine Drive and up Main Street. The event has received more media attention in recent years and with few street festivals in Vancouver it will only get bigger.

Vaisakhi is a harvest festival held in April in both Surrey and Vancouver. Vaisakhi (Baisakhi) is celebrated in many parts of India. Though it is said to be the day that Siddhartama Gautama (Buddha) attained enlightenment and is also holy to Hindus, in Vancouver it is primarly a Sikh festival.
