Pack for all weathers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Make sure you take layers when visiting Vancouver Island in the summer. During our July visit we experienced a couple of cool rainy days but also quite a few warm and sunny ones. Shorts and long trousers, t-shirts and a warm sweater or two, and a waterproof jacket should see you through most situations, although if you plan to eat in any of the nicer restaurants you may want to pack something just a little smarter.

There are plenty of walking and hiking trails, so you'll want good walking shoes.

There are plenty of shops selling all the basics, but don't rely on finding everything, especially if you're going hiking in the quieter parts of the island. And don't forget the sun lotion and insect repellant - plus the soothing cream or lotion for when they do get through!

If you're really going off the beaten path consider taking some bear bells, which can be bought on the island. You wear these round your ankles so that they jingle as you walk and keep bears away.

If you visit Vancouver Island in the spring, fall or winter you might want to bring an umbrella as it can rain quite a bit sometimes! In the summer it can rain too of course, but not that much, but bringing an umbrella and a rain jacket as it can be usefull in any season over here. Especially winter is bad for rain and rain gear is a must.

    Diver's Guide
Well if you are a diver and are planning on coming to Vancouver Island then the book Diver's Guide Vancouver Island South would be quite useful. It is written by Greg Dombowsky and is published by Heritage House. Over 50 of the areas sites are included in this book with maps and some pictures. Also how to get to the dive sites and what to expect once you are there. He covers the local flora and fauna you'd expect to see. Expect to pay around $15 Canadian for the book.
