    Luminara: Magical family evening

by suziezed Updated May 14, 2004

I can't honestly remember when Luminara got its start (not more than 5 years ago I think) but it has quickly become Victoria's most popular free event.

The event will occur on July 24, 2004 but lantern making courses will begin soon around town.

Luminara - as the name suggests - is a festival of lights and lanterns. It occurs in Beacon Hill Park for several hours from dusk until midnight or so (as I remember). It is not an exaggeration to say it is MAGICAL. Hundreds of lanterns are set up throughout the park, in the trees, on the grass, floating on the water, on the islands in the lakes and hanging from trees and shrubs.

There are performers and entertainers and tons of people - mostly families. The atmosphere is phenomenal - it's a totally different nightlife scene than most of us have ever experienced.

There will be a Luminara Illumination Station at FolkFest where you can learn more about the event and perhaps make a lantern of your own to take. FolkFest is from June 26th to July 4th, 2004.

Dress Code: You might want to consider wearing anything you have with reflective strips and also bringing a flashlight (torch).
