Outlying Communities, Victoria
The town of 'Sidney' is often overlooked when travellers make their way from the ferry terminal to Victoria. Sidney is actually the town you arrive in when you take the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria. When you're on the highway to Victoria, you'll see a road intersecting with a large sign to the east saying, 'Welcome to Sidney-by-the-Sea'. If you were to turn down that road, you'll get to experience a very cute town on the waterfront. Sidney is known for its bookstores. There are about half a dozen tiny bookshops - some are old, some are new, selling all sorts of treasures. If you're a book lover, Sidney is a must. If you have time to spare before boarding the ferry back to Vancouver, spend an hour here soaking up the sunshine and looking out at the San Juan and Gulf Islands. The photo I took is at the Sidney waterfront - you can see the San Juan islands in the background.
I don't know what to say about this photo other than to tell you that this is not an amusement park or a museum ... but just the home of somebody who really likes the sea!
The Observatory, north of Victoria, on highway 17a is worth avisit on a Suterday night, if the sky is clear. You can look throug the 1.8 meters telescope.
Go north on 17a, West Saanich Road
Another pic from Metchosin, this is the Lagoon in front of where I used to live. The swans live here year round, and as you can see have just had babies :)
This is the view from Mitchell Bros. (which is on the top of the hill). It overlooks the fields where the vegies are grown.
And now, for my favorite part, the just-picked raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and bing cherries. August is my favorite time to visit Oldfield Orchard.
A photo of the owners of Oldfield Orchard and Bakery, Debbie and Derek Scott. And there's those cinammon buns again! [ :-)
Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. 19 km west of Parksville off Hwy 4. The park straddles Little Qualicum River. Park users should be aware of bears and other wildlife.
If you have a car, take the scenic drive around the coast of Victoria and other communities. Photo taken at Beacon Hill Park.
