Hatley Castle, Victoria
If Hatley Castle somehow appears familiar it may because that it makes a frequent appearance in movies and TV series programs. This castle has appeared in the X-Men film series as well as serving as Lex Luthor's residence in the Smallville TV series.
James Dunsmuir, former Premier and Lieutenant-Governor of BC, constructed Hatley Castle as his estate between 1906 and 1908. Upon the death of the Dunsmuirs, the estate was purchaed in 1940 by the Canadian Government to serve as a Naval Training Establishment, HMCS Royal Roads. In 1947 it was converted into the Canadian Services College Royal Roads to train officers of all military branches. In 1968, the name of the College was changed to Royal Roads Military College. In 1995, the military college was closed and the private post-secondary Royal Roads University was established and opened immediately.
Hatley castle overlooks an aviary lagoon (Esquimalt Lagoon) and Juan de Fuca Strait providing a striking background. The castle is on 565 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds which include Italian, Japanese, and English rose gardens.
The garden costs $12 with a tour of the castle costing an additional $3 (2006).
