One of the legends of the 486 ton white rock on the beach is that it is the landing spot of a stone that was hurled across the Strait of Georgia by a young Indian chief. It was said that he and his bride moved there from Vancouver Island to make a home together. Another, less charming reason, is that it was covered in white bird poop. Either way, these days it is kept white by applications of white paint to keep it fresh and cover up graffiti. As you’re walking along the beach, stop at the white rock and take a few pictures with it. That’s about all there is to do around it, but you have to visit the town’s namesake while you’re there.

This small museum and archives is located in the old White Rock train station on Marine Drive, right on the beach, which gives it a very cool old atmosphere. It offers a peek at the history of the railroad in White Rock, as well as some really good information on the sea life, birds and nature of the area. I didn’t see the archives area, but the building is much bigger than just the part you’ll see while you’re in the museum. The museum is run by a mix of paid staff and volunteers. There’s a good gift shop with great local souvenirs like paintings and photo prints, and regular stuff like postcards and magnets.
Admission is by donation.
Hours: January to March open 10am – 5pm Tuesday to Sunday, April to December, open daily 10am – 5pm

The Promenade is another main focal point of White Rock. Running directly parallel to the beach, it is a 7200 ft long walkway with benches and points of interest along the way, as well as public bathrooms. I personally think walking along the Promenade is a bit more romantic than a stroll on the pier, because the further you go in either direction from the centre (the pier), the less people there are, and you get to see the entire East Beach and West Beach. It’s nice to slowly wander along the promenade and stop to sit on a bench or a log, gazing out into the ocean and watching the seagulls strutting around. There’s something about the silence and stillness in the air that I quite enjoy.

The pier is one of the things people think of when they think of White Rock. There are always people walking up and down the pier, some for a romantic hand-in-hand stroll, lovers young and old, some for their evening jog, some friends enjoying a laugh and families with little kids. I liked walking to the end and seeing the few boats docked, the fishermen catching crabs and the starfish on the rocks. My husband lived in White Rock when he was very young, and his mom would always tell me about how her and her husband would stroll along the pier at night and then sneak a bottle of wine onto the beach and watch the sunset. It’s one of her favorite places anywhere, and now I can understand why. It’s especially magical at dusk.

Oh, it was great! Home made Ice-cream...
Generally I love Ice-cream and that's my and Rob's weakness.
So when we cam there I asked for the most chocolate ice-cream ever and they suggested to try Chocolate by the Death :) it was so good!

You don't have to walk right over to it to see the White Rock - with that brilliant white paint, you can see it quite well from the Pier. And of course, it is always great to frame it between yourself and a friend for the picture, so you know that you were there!

White Rock beach is very nice, and it holds fond memories for me.. There's a bench I once sat at with a very old girlfriend looking out over the ocean, and it's always been a great memory to look back on..
There's a very long pier that people walk along in the summer, usually with an ice-cream cone in hand.. young teens jump from the end, doing back-flips, and landing in the water below!
