Loran "C" (LOng Range Aids to Navigation) is a marine navigation tower located near Riske Creek on Highway 20.
It is used to triangulate ship positions off the Pacific Coast.
The tower is more than 600 feet high with flashing strobe lights to warn of its position to local aircraft.
But, why is the tower located where it is? The reason behind this is the fact that it allows for more precise locating by having a very long baseline relative to the other towers near the coast and its altitude is such that it gives a very clear line of sight.
