The road up to Chaunigan Lake
Once you reach Vedan Lake, you come to this...the steep road climbing up to Chaunigan Lake...it's well worth the effort. The humorous signs along the way give you some encouragement ;o)) It's about 7km to the top, is quite narrow and passes through some very old growth Douglas fir forest The elevation gain is about 1200 feet.
The back roads into the wilderness
Be aware that travel around the Williams Lake and Chilcotin can often involve delays for highway maintenance and construction.
Here, they are repairing the planks on the bridge crossing the Chilcotin River at Hanceville. The road here leads to the Nemiah Valley about 95km to the southwest. It had rained considerably and the surface of the road was rather muddy and greasy for the better part of the distance, specially on the hills. After a few days of sunny weather the road dries out and then there is a lot of dust!
