Take a picnic & enjoy the fresh air
  • Tip Rating:
  • Some scenic tourist spots don't have any eating facilities or shops etc. Taking a picnic lets you stay longer and makes your day more enjoyable.
You can make up your own picnic if you stay in a cabin with kitchen facilities or buy a ready made lunch from local restaurants, hotels and food stores.
It is always a good idea to take water & some food with you - hunger can strike even if the beautiful scenery is a distraction

The dog in the picture was intent on thinking about the squirrels for his lunch as he listened to their squeeky calls.

This road sign explains a lot about what is to see and to do in Yoho National Park.
These sign are really informative ,they are always located either at a rest stop or at an official information Centre, or when entering a new Province.

You will find this sign on the road from Banff to Golden just entering British Columbia.

The story of Yoho is mountains, ice and water. Summer is short and residents are few. Even in the summer, mornings can be frosty. The weather can change instantaneously. A clear sky can suddenly turn dark and snow is possible any day of the year. Access to warm clothes is essential.

As we drove up the Bow Valley Parkway to Yoho the temperature was a constant 42 Deg F (about 5 C). As we meandered through Kicking Horse pass the temps dropped into the 30s. It was actually snowing up on the crags of Cathedral Mountain. It was July 3! It can snow any day of the year in the Canadian Rockies and we saw evidence of that on several different days during our stay.

Water is never far away in the Canadian Rockies and around every corner there is different stunning landscape of forested mountains.

The smell of pine, the sound of rushing water and the pleasant summer mountain breezes are a treat for all the senses.

The first white men to enter the area known as Yoho were led by a man named James Hector. Hector discovered Kicking Horse Pass and led his expedition down what is now known as Kicking Horse River. The horses apparently were in a bit of a temper because their legs were getting nicked up by loose rocks and fallen timber. One horse delivered a swift kick to Hector's chest and he was knocked senseless. He was knocked so senseless that after two hours his guides decided he was lifeless and began to bury him. Half way through the burial process, Hector's eyelids started to twitch which was fortunately noticed by one of the guides and they ceased efforts to bury their leader.

Emerald Lake is a beautiful lake located in Yoho National Park. It's a pretty quiet place compared to all the other lakes in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It's such a calming lake and a canoe trip is perfect to experience this!

We rented a canoe at Emerald Lake, there's a canoe and boat rental. We did about 2-3 hour trip on this lake and had some great views. Most of all I enjoyed the serenity of this beautiful lake with the surrounding mountains. After that we went into the Emerald Lake lodge for a snack and a drink. It was fantastic! If you have time, you should definitely rent a canoe at Emerald Lake!

Emerald Lake is a beautiful green and often seen on picture postcards. On the shore is Emerald Lake Lodge that the Canadian Pacific Railway built and now caters to tourists from all over the world.

I love this lake as it's surround by mountains and forest. It has a very cozy setting and the emerald color of this lake is unbelievable. Just relax on the shorelines on a bench or on the grass and take in the beauty and serenity of this lake! Make sure that you go earlier in the morning or in the evening...then there are hardly any tourists around.

Finn Creek in Yoho National Park is a real nice place to take a break and have a picnic. Or just to walk around and stretch your legs. This creek is a side creek of the Kicking Horse River with a little bridge, picnic benches and a picnic shelter.

We stopped at this creek to strech our legs and have a small picnic. It was so nice, no people there and you could sit on the edges of the Kicking Horse River where this little creek flows to. Nice place to stop for a moment. You can see the signs from Highway 1 where to turn off.
