Truffle Pigs Cafe: It may have been small but this place had it all
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • After visiting Yoho Nationa Park we stopped of in Field - small was not the word but worth the stop - The food is barbequed outside - but the grill was off when we visited - the friendly waitress offered us sandwiches.
This little place has everything you could need - a small shop - restaurant - outside seating & great views of the trains as they come into Field.

The waitress recommended the Bog berry and mango chicken Sandwich - served on thick dark brown bread with salad . We asked the waitress what bog berries were, she laughed and told us they were fresh cranberries - don't know if the bears like them but I certainly did. My husband enjoyed the dish "kill two birds with one stone" flamingo and turkey sandwich check out the menu on their web site to see no flamingo was used in the dish!

Cilantro on the Lake: Good food with spectacular views
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Although this restaurant sits adjacent to the parking lot across a small bridge, you hardly notice the lot with the spectacular lake views and towering pines. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. Outdoor seating is a must if visiting on a warm, sunny day. The atmosphere is casual, the building rustic but modern and very inviting.

Given the outstanding location, we expected prices to be expensive but they were about average for the area. We were there for lunch and they served sandwiches, salads, soups, pizza and fresh fish. Although I don't remember the details, they used herbs and fresh vegetables and food was very good.

    Kicking Horse Lounge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Kicking Horse Lounge at the Emerald Lake Lodge at lunch offers a quiet respite from the tourist crowds at their lakeside restaurant, Cilantro. The menu is fairly limited, but what's there is really good. The room is sunny, and has an outdoor patio, plus the showstopper is the huge original oak bar from 1902. Once you're done checking out the bar, you can pick a comfy easy chair and relax by looking out at the magnificent views of the lake.

The service was very pleasant but a little slow, considering that there were only three small dining parties in the whole place. We waited approx 40 minutes for our order of club sandwiches, but it was worth the wait.

The sandwiches consisted of real grilled turkey breast, plus the unique addition of elk ham plus bacon. The corporation that owns the lodge has it's own ranch where it raises game, such as elk. The elk ham was very much like a pastrami. The accompanying caesar salad was crisp and fresh, with homemade dressing.

Overall, the dining experience was quite good and we would return, even with the slow service.

    The Outpost Pub
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Outpost Pub is located in the basement of the upscale Post Hotel, in Lake Louise.

Recently made non-smoking, the pub is warm and inviting, with a large wood-burning fireplace, dark brown wood panelling that screams "pub" and big, soft, down-filled leather couches and armchairs. Though called a pub, the room tends to cater to those wishing a filling, casual meal, or a comfy place to take the family without breaking the bank in the upstairs dining room.

The service is casual and friendly, and the food, though sounding like typical pub food, is very high quality. It comes from the same kitchen that churns out the Lobster Spring Rollls with Mango Reduction for the Wine Spectator award-winning dining room upstairs. Servings are extremely large, so don't let your eyes get bigger than your stomach.

You really can't go wrong with ordering anything on the menu. They have daily creative specials; my most recent favorite was the Beef Tenderloin in Fettucine with a peppercorn and pink grapefruit cream sauce. Weird sounding, but tasted fabulous. Our perennial favorite, though, is the beef goulash with spaetzle, which goes down very well after a day of hiking.

This casual dining room is set on a peninsula that looks out over the green waters of Emerald Lake. The decor is rustic casual, as the building itself is built out of logs, and the menu reflects the casual atmosphere. There is also another Cilantro's in Calgary, which has a more sophisticated menu.

Service is friendly if a bit slow -- we found service overall to be a tad slow at the Emerald Lake Lodge dining rooms. The staff tend to be younger, but their cheerfulness and enthusiasim do make up for the slow service.

The menu is loaded with good, hearty food -- great entrees for refueling after a long hike or for just having a casual and filling meal. A specialty of Cilantro is their thin-crust pizzas. The elk ham pizza with carmalized onions and peppers wins hands down overall. The corporation that owns Emerald Lake Lodge has their own game farm and they incorporate their game into all the menus at the hotel. Another favorite we had was the Spaghetti and Meatballs. The meatballs are made with lean bison, and don't be shy -- the bison is farmed and does not taste gamey, but tates like beef is supposed to taste like. Make sure to ask for extra sauce -- the meatballs are presented on top of sauced pasta, barren of sauce and this makes them a teeny bit dry.

Seasonal hours -- open from May to October; also may be closed for private functions, so please call before going to avoid disappointment

Instead of going to a restaurant, why not take a picnic along and use one of the many picnic areas in this beautiful National Park.

If the weather is nice this is a great way to enjoy the beautiful nature while you picnic.

If you like you can even take a small portable barbeque and cook up some stuff at one of these picnic areas in Yoho National Park. We seen several people making their own sandwiches/hotdogs and use a barbeque to cook a burger, a wiener or other things.
