The Garter snake dens is the only thing why people visit this remote northern town of Manitoba.
It is actually the winter home of ten of thousands of grater snakes or commonly know as garden snakes. Narcisse has the biggest concentration so it's really awesome to see them going out. There are actually around 4 pits along the trail in the woods which are subterranean caverns made of limestone bedrock. The snakes go out in frenzy during spring to do their mating rituals before dispersing everywhere and wandering all summer. I only saw a handful during my visit maybe I am too early or late.
The best time to visit is late April to early May, which is the mating season or early September, when the snakes slither back down to their winter dens.
