    Winnipeg Off The Beaten Path

Approximately 45 minutes from downtown Winnipeg you will find Birds Hill Provincial Park. This is a multi-use park which Winnipeggers use as a day trip destination. We have hiked or skied most of the park's trails -- my favourite is the Cedar bog hike in winter. Besides the many trails (for hiking, skiing, bicycle riding, horseback riding, etc.),...

    Winnipeg Off The Beaten Path

What does Manitoba have that places like Alberta or Ontario don't? We have reasonably-priced cottages, camping and vacations spots galore - all within short distance from a beach. (Manitoba has 100,000 lakes). For instance, only 70 minutes from Winnipeg is Grand Beach. Soft sand, warm clean water (well warm in summer anyways), girls -- there are...

Lockport is a small community north of Winnipeg about 40 minutes travel. It is also the site of ancient agricultural inhabitation and also considered one of the oldest known settlement in Canada . The dam and lock of Red river can be found in Lockport as well. This place frequented by people who loves fishing during summer because it is one of the...

If you have a bike in Winnipeg, there are some rough trails down by Assiniboine Park along the river. (Known by locals as 'The Monkey Trails') These trails can also be found down by the river along Crescent Drive. There is a paved bike/footpath from the Forks to the Legislative Grounds by the river as well.

  • Gladstone: home of the Happy Rock

And you think I'm goofy. I'm telling you the wit of the Canadian people is a bottomless cavern. There is this town called Gladstone smack in the middle of nowhere. No one ever visits, yet the crazy folk of Gladstone erect a big make believe rock. stick a kind of claymation smiling rockman on top of the artificial rock and call it Happy Rock. Happy...

  • Tiny blue dragonfly

While driving through Manitoba we came upon a national park out in the middle of nowhere called Riding Mountain National Park. Lots of lakes, swamps, bogs and a tiny little hill called Riding Mountain. We stopped at one of the many lakes to stretch our legs and snap some photos. Big mistake. Riding Mountain National Park is infested with billions...

  • Go to Gimli!

When we were moving from BC to Ottawa, Ontario, in 1988, we just had to take a little bypass to go to Gimli, Manitoba. It, apparently is the largest community of Icelandic-descended people in the world (outside of Iceland). Given that I have a few Icelandic ancestors, myself, we had to go. It was pretty interesting. On another note, Gimli was where...
