Spectator Sports, Winnipeg
There is quite the choice of spectator sports in Winnipeg. The Blue Bombers (Canadian football), the Moose (hockey, the AHL) and the Goldeyes (baseball, Northern League).
It is too bad that the city lost the Winnipeg Jets NHL hockey team, but at the prices of the tickets, it was inevitable. What I don't understand is that we have lost a basketball team and a soccer team in the past 10 years as well.
Baseball and minor league (AHL) hockey are doing well. The baseball park is now about 8 years old, and just got renovated recently to add seats. The hockey arena is brand new as well (and downtown).
Our family has been going to football games for 35 years (season tickets) but we only attend baseball and hockey about once a year.
The Assiniboine Downs is the local racetrack for horse racing. There are usually races on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Any holiday monday will have races. Open from May - Oct.
The Aug. long weekend Monday is the Manitoba Derby. On this day, the biggest race (largest purse) is held.
Sundays are family days. There are pony rides, petting zoo and kid activities. The admission to the track is free. All activities for the kids are free. NOTE: food and drinks sre very expensive. I usually bring my oen in a backpack.
There is a resturant and bar on sight. It is cheap entertainment. A couple $2 bets a race will cost you less then $40 for the day if you don't win any races.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes are our baseball team. There season runs from late May to early August. The Blue Bombers are our professional football team. They play in the CFL (Canadian Football League). I would recommend the Goldeyes games because the tickets are cheap, and there is alot of interaction between the fans and the team. I would recommend the Blue Bombers because you get to see great football action. The tickets are affordable to.
Equipment: For the Goldeyes games you should bring a hat and a baseball glove. For the Bomber game you can bring a radio so you can listen to the game, and maybe a hat so you won't get sunburnt.
