    The 'Lady Whitehead' Ferry

    MV 'Lady Whitehead'

The 'Lady Whitehead' is an 8 car, 45 passenger ferry operated by Coastal Transport for the New Brunswick government. It is one of a fleet of ferries that provide free services across the many rivers in southern NB as well as to selected off-shore islands.

This one operates 11.5 hours per day, taking about 28 minutes to make each crossing between Grand Manan and the smaller Whitehead Island. In our case, we missed the 2:30 PM sailing, so had to wait as it came back into port in the photo so we could sail out on its 3:30 departure. We were not aware that following its arrival on Whitehead at about 4 PM, it would sit there for 30 minutes before leaving again at 4:30. If we did not take that one for our return trip, we would have had to wait for its final run of the day at 7 PM. As a result of all this, we ended up only having from 4 PM to 4:30 PM on the island! About half the vehicles on the ferry were American tourists from Maine when we made our trip, and they seemed to be enjoying the experience!

    Whitehead Island in the Fog

    A Fog-bound Island

Other than Grand Manan itself, Whitehead is the only other of the small islands around Grand Manan that is permanently settled. It has a population of 185 people, mostly engaged in fishing. The island was named for its abundance of white quartzite rock which forms one of its headlands. We also saw many large boulders made up of this material, used as breakwaters.

Because of the fog and our short ferry waiting time, we did not have much chance to do any exploring. These quaint old buildings are only a short distance from the dock area.

    Waiting for the Ferry

After having our late lunch at the Kwik-Way store, we biked the relatively short distance out to Ingalls Head, where we intended to catch the free ferry to the even smaller Whitehead Island. However, our timing was off by about 1 minute - the ferry was pulling away from the landing just as we peddled up! Since the ferry runs every hour, we decided to simply wait it out for the next one at 3:30 PM.

There is a power station overlooking the wharf area, so I went in to speak to some of the guys there, since it had been 29 years since I last visited them! When I came back to the harbour, I found Russell spending his time much more productively on a small wharf overlooking the main part of Ingalls Head !

    Lobster Traps on Whitehead Island

Upon returning to the ferry dock, we wandered around some of the other piers in this area. Judging from the number of modern lobster traps (not the old wooden ones), this must be one of the major fishing activities for the residents of Whitehead Island.
