Visit Carbonear Island, if you can. You will need your own boat or you will have to ask someone to take you out.

There wasa fort on Carbonear island since atleast the 1670's. In 1696, the residents of carbonear retreated to the island and repelled French attacks. Again, they retreated to the island when Daniel Sunercase attacked.

The fort was maintained during King William's War. In 1762, during the 7 Year War, the guns were derecict and abandoned when French warships attacked the town.
The fortifications were maintained during the American Revolution and during the War of 1812 but have lain silent since that time.
