There are only 2 ways to get on the island. Fly or drive the fixed link from New Brunswick. Sometimes in the summer months they do have the ferries running and its a great tourist attraction. Be prepared the ferries and bridge cost. Depending on the size of your vehicle.
Drive or bike.

Fly into Moncton, New Brunswick and then drive along the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border, across the Confederation Bridge, and onto PEI. Think it's too long? We flew on a red-eye from San Francisco to Chicago, stopped over for 2 hours, flew to Montreal, stopped over for three hours, flew to Moncton... and then got in a car so I could drive another 2-1/2 hours to get us to the North Shore of PEI. Now, I don't have the best stamina, but I did it and totally enjoyed it. It was totally worth it. To fly into Charlottetown, it's much MUCH more expensive!!!!
RENT A CAR. If you think you can walk around PEI, you're nuts. If you're into cycling, you're set. That's a great way to get around, as the Confederation Trail is available to you, and you can really enjoy the scenery. But we drove everywhere and it was delightful.

If you're driving, cycling, or a pedestrian, you will have to take the Centennial Bridge from the mainland.
Cyclists and pedestrians are not allowed on the bridge. However, a free shuttle service is available several times a day.

The best way to get to PEI is Confederation Bridge. the bridge is 12.9KM long, the longest bridge over ice covered waters in the world.
Keep in mind that there is a toll to use the Bridge. You dont pay on the way there, but you pay to leave the island. When I went in 1998 it was 48.50 for the vehicle and 4 passengers.
