Favorite thing: After you drive through the community of L'anse au Loup enroute to Capstan Island you are going to come upon a large hill called the Battery. It is way up there and a winding road that you should take caution on. In the winter time especially this area can be tricky.
As you can see though this a great place to get some pictures. The view from on top of the Battery is great. In this picture you can see the small fishing community of Capstan Island.
There is also a trail up there worth looking into for sure. I am not sure exactly where you enter the trail but if I remember correctly there is a sign pointing you in the right direction. I know when I took these pictures there were plenty of ice bergs visible from here as well.
Fondest memory: Here is a description of the Battery Trail from www.labradorcoastaldrive.com.
The Battery Trail winds through stunted "tuckamore forest", the climax forest growth of the Labrador coast, and then across barren grounds to the summit of the Battery -- the highest land in the region. At trail end a spectacular panorama of the Strait of Belle Isle can be enjoyed, with excellent views of icebergs and, frequently, humpback whales. Please exercise caution when walking on the Battery, as steep cliffs drop sharply to the ocean. A fenced area is provided for your safety and enjoyment.
Duration: 30 to 45 minutes one direction
Degree of difficulty: easy
L'anse au Clair Beach
Favorite thing: Here is another great beach in the Labrador Straits. If you are staying at the Northern Light Inn you might want to walk down here and just relax.
It is a great beach and you can take some nice hikes along the rocky shoreline and view the steep cliffs and ocean.
If you get a day with a breeze this is a great activity.
I haven't seen this yet but you might want to also ask about the new Jersey Rooms Project. Its an archeological dig in the area that is still in progress but has a lot of historical significance for the area.
L'anse Amour Beach
Favorite thing: The Labrador Straits area has several great beaches that you can make your own when visiting the area.
In this picture you can see the beach at L'anse Amour. It is a great place to relax and call your own. There is a picnic table and stuff there as well for your convenience. But the view is great from here.
The communities of L'anse au Clair and L'anse au Loup also have great sandy beaches areas you can stroll around on.
Gateway to the Straits
Favorite thing: When you enter the first community in the Labrador Straits; L'anse au Clair you will see this converted church.
It is now a visitor center and it is staffed during the tourism season.
You can stop in here and ask any new questions you might have and get yourself oriented.
Other Online Resources
Favorite thing: There are some very good web sites on the Internet that promote this region. So I have listed these web sites in this general tip.
Labrador Coastal Drive Web Site
Doug Robbins Labrador Straits Page
Combined Councils of Labrador
Favorite thing: Enroute to Capstan Island as you travel down over the "Battery" hill you will see plenty of boats at a place called L'anse Diable.
Just FYI, no body lives there anymore, it is a private business now that specializes in the winter storage and restoration of marine vessels.
