    Bell Island Location

Bell Island is a much much smaller island then the island of Newfoundland itself located off the Avalon Peninsula.

I took a day trip here once to explore the place and see what it was like over there and it was certainly worth the visit.

There are regular ferry crossings each day and its a very short drive from the provincial capital of St. John's.

You will enjoy the boat ride over and there are some cool underground mining tours, the island was once a mining location. Today most people communte to St. John's for work.

On my visit I didn't do any hiking but the cliffs around Bell Island are very steep and dramatic. Next time around I think it would be cool to explore the island on food along the coastline and make a day of it.

    Deer Lake Location

Deer Lake is a town located over on the west coast of Newfoundland and is situated in a fork in the road. When you drive here you can decide to either turn and go up the Northern Peninsula and Labrador or you can continue to follow the Trans-Canada Highway and go across to central Newfoundland.

Home to one of the main airports in the province I have been to Deer Lake many many times as well.

Besides where it is located as a decision point in the highway there is a lot of stuff to actually go in Deer Lake from an outdoors perspective from hunting, snowmobiling, golfing and so on. It's very close to Gros Morne National Park so many people fly into Deer Lake then explore the park or head for Marble Mountain Ski Resort.

The town is also home to NHL hockey player Darren Langdon and he has his own popular sports bar in the town.

    Gander, NL location

Gander is a busy town located right on the Trans-Canada Highway in central Newfoundland. It is a mid way point and a popular meeting area for events that involve everyone on the island.

I have visited Gander now on numerous occassions for work, study or just travelling and have always had good times in Gander.

The Gander Hotel is fun on the weekends for nightouts, there is some great kareokee in Gander and its a great staging point to explore the rest of central Newfoundland.

Gander is also home to a very big International airport built back in the days of World War II so many people have stopped into Gander on Trans-Atlantic flights.

    Lewisporte, NL location

Lewisporte is a fair size town located in the central area of Newfoundland but situated by the water.

It is a very scenic region and a prime spot for boating. There is a nice marina in the community as seen in my picture and adventerers in sail boats often stop in here.

Lewisporte is also a docking location for the provincial ferry system that access the Labrador region. So if your travelling to Labrador you might want to use this port however I much more highly recommend you take the drive and cross at the Strait of Belle Isle. That way you enjoy the beautiful scenery of western Newfounland, the Northern Peninsula and Southern Labrador.

Otherwise a boat trip from this point on the island to Labrador can be very very rough and sea sickness isn't fun :-)

Kayaking is also popular out in this region of the island :-)
