    Nain by Boat and Air

by rumbaugp Written Sep 7, 2006

My husband and I just recently traveled to Nain via the Northern Ranger. This is very pleasant and especially interesting if you're used to cruises: the crew don't seem to care where you are on the boat! You can watch the hold area being loaded while standing right beside the crane! While you don't get all the attention and service of a cruise line, you do get much more freedom and a closer look at the operation of a freight boat.

But you've got to be prepared for lots of local kids of all ages spending their time in the lounge area: for many, a comfortable chair there serves as a bed as well as a seat. This is one of only two means for people in the coastal communities to move about to other communities.

We returned via Provincial Airline (PAL), which I think is much like Air Labrador. A Twin Otter picked us up at the Nain gravel (short!) airstrip. In these days of heightened security, it seemed odd to carry your own (unsearched) luggage out to the airplane, accompanied by visitors who've come to see the plane off.

The ferry service runs from June until late in the fall so for half the year aircraft is the only way to reach Nain, Hopedale, Rigolette and the other communities along the coast of Labrador.

Air Labrador is there even when the coastal ship is not and provides services for the coast atleast six days a week.

People in Nain love their quads. If you talk to someone and make a friend, then I am sure you could come to some sort of agreement.
