The North West River history is full of trapping and aboriginal stories. The Labrador wilderness has also sparked the imagination of many famous adventurers.
In the early 1900s Mina Benson Hubbard and Dillon Wallace lead competing expeditions from North West River to Ungava Bay.
I have a couple of great books listed where you can read about these specific expeditions and in 2005 the town is having an extensive Centennial Celebration.
A Woman's Way Through Unknown Labrador by Mina Benson Hubbard
Lure of the Labrador Wild by Dillon Wallace
Great Heart by John Rugge & James Davidson
Many people today still organize their own expeditions and explore the interior on a regular basis with local guides and a lot of planning!!!
North West River is just 33 kilometers from the largest community in central Labrador; Happy Valley - Goose Bay.
Many residents of North West River work and commute to Goose Bay on a daily basis and a lot of services are provided out of this community.
In this tip I have provided a link to my Happy Valley - Goose Bay specific tips.
This mile long walking trail begins from the north end of North West River beach and follows the shoreline. Once you hit the beach just turn left and you should see the sign at the end of the beach.
If you don't see it turn to your other left :-).
It also has the added convenience of bridges and signage.
This trail was developed by a Newfoundland and Labrador Conversation Corps "Green Team"
It is a great walk in the summer and fall seasons.
When driving to North West River from Happy Valley - Goose Bay you will find a very scenic waterfall.
It is a very short distance after you pass Mount Shana and Goose River Lodges and before Gosling Lake on the left hand side of the road.
You will see a sign next to a heavily wooded area that simply reads, "Scenic Waterfall". You need to park road side and take about a 5 minute walk on a forest trail.
It is well worth the short walk considering this very nice waterfall.
Just across the river you will find the Innu community of Sheshatshiu. Sheshatshiu is just one kilometer from North West River and thirty two kilometers from Happy Valley - Goose Bay.
Sheshatshiu is a growing community with a lot of young Innu children and expanding infrastructure.
The community is now home to an Olympic size hockey rink, modern health facilities and housing.
Like North West River the views in Sheshatshiu are also very impressive!
