It is not that easy to have home and local cooked seafood. Between the fishing moritoriums and limited seasons, if you did not go to a higher class restaurant, you often got frozen seafood - not only that, but only deep fried fish with french fries.
We did not give up, and after a couple of days, we learned to ask if anything was fresh and could we have it served pan fried. I guess I am not a connoisseur. I could not tell you the difference between haddock and cod and turbot.

Newfoundland is famous for it's fish & chips so this dish is a must try when you are there. The fish is usually nicely battered, fried and served with lots of chips, vegetables or whipped potato. Sometimes other items such as fried scallops are included as well. Leave a Comment Theme: Seafood

Besides the seafood, the chowders & bisques at Newfoundland are very delicious as well. I managed to try the clam chowder, seafood chowder and king crab bisque at Newfoundland and all of them are very delicious. Also, there are other interesting soups which you can try, including a curry soup which I managed to drink at St John's. Leave a Comment Theme: Local

WE had self serve and several choices.

Jackie's is a must for the locals, so you should definitely stop in here for a bite. Everything is homemade.. the fish and chips are great. It is not open a lot in the winter, but in summer it is open and always busy.
Prices go up in the summer, obviously for tourists but it is worth it. Great homemade food. Maybe the ceasar salad will not be as good as the ones in Montreal, but their specialties are fish, chicken and soups... very good.
Go there, I think you will like it.
