  • Seafood - Province of Newfoundland and Labrador
    Seafood
    by Redlats
Following the rule of "When in Rome, do as the Romans do", we tried to eat seafood for most meals.

It is not that easy to have home and local cooked seafood. Between the fishing moritoriums and limited seasons, if you did not go to a higher class restaurant, you often got frozen seafood - not only that, but only deep fried fish with french fries.

We did not give up, and after a couple of days, we learned to ask if anything was fresh and could we have it served pan fried. I guess I am not a connoisseur. I could not tell you the difference between haddock and cod and turbot.

Cod tongue is one of my favourite dish in Newfoundland, and I really love it fried to perfection, Also, the Cod-Au-Gratin is cod fish covered in cheese and it is a very nice dish as well. These two local seafood dishes are a must try when you are in Newfoundland.

Newfoundland is famous for it's fish & chips so this dish is a must try when you are there. The fish is usually nicely battered, fried and served with lots of chips, vegetables or whipped potato. Sometimes other items such as fried scallops are included as well.

Besides the seafood, the chowders & bisques at Newfoundland are very delicious as well. I managed to try the clam chowder, seafood chowder and king crab bisque at Newfoundland and all of them are very delicious. Also, there are other interesting soups which you can try, including a curry soup which I managed to drink at St John's.

    Fisherman's Landing
    Restaurant, Newfoundland

The Fisherman's Landing Restaurant is located at the town centre of Rocky Harbour, situated at the famous Gros Morne National Park. The sea is just in front across a small road, and it is next to the Ocean View Motel. This restaurant opens all year round and serves very delicious local seafood, other dishes as well as pizza. I enjoyed having a few meals here and would recommend to those who visit Rocky Harbour. More information on Rocky Harbour is at my VT Woody Point page.

  • Jackie's is a must for the locals, so you should definitely stop in here for a bite. Everything is homemade.. the fish and chips are great. It is not open a lot in the winter, but in summer it is open and always busy.

Prices go up in the summer, obviously for tourists but it is worth it. Great homemade food. Maybe the ceasar salad will not be as good as the ones in Montreal, but their specialties are fish, chicken and soups... very good.

Go there, I think you will like it.

The restaurant at Deer Lake Motel located along the Trans-Canadian Highway near to Deer Lake town offers delicious local foos, especially the seafood. I tried the seafood platter consisting of smoked salmon, halibut, scallops etc and it was very delicious. Also, the environment is very cosy and relax, and it opens all year round. Voted one of the top places to eat in St. John’s Ches’s Fish & Chips is as unpretentious as it is good. Newfoundlanders swear by its cod dinner
