Born in Goose Bay, Labrador, Lisa Learning is a Metis artist who loves to experience and create various art mediums. Her digital art, caribou hair sculptures, rayograms and photographs are mainly inspired by Labradors northern landscapes and her aboriginal heritage. She has completed a BBA degree at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia as well as a photography diploma at Holland College in PEI.

In looking for ways to make this responsibility a reality and in connection with Mr. Waymare Harish, an occupational therapist, it was recommended that the creation of a Pottery Industry could meet the therapeutic/medical needs of these individuals.
With tremendous support from various funding agencies, the pottery program became a reality for six Myotonic individuals, two challenging needs individuals, a short-term instructor, and a Coordinator to oversee the project.
Their mandate is to implement a pottery training course that will embrace skill development, provide meaningful employment, and ultimately lead to business development that will see the marketing of the pottery products outside the area utilizing the handicapped logo.
A visit here will not only allow you an opportunity to appreciate the finished pieces, or view the art of pottery-making in action, but you share in the feeling of unity as these myotonic and challenging-needs participants give life to their mounds of clay with their own special touch.

 The Talking Stick by jamiesno
The talking stick has been used for centuries by many American Indian tribes as a means of just and impartial hearing. The talking stick was commonly used in council circles to designate who had the right to speak. When matters of great concern came before the council, the leading elder would old the talking stick and begin the discussion. When he finished what he had to say he would hold out the talking stick, and whoever wished to speak after him would take it. In this manner teh stick was passed from one individual to another until all who wished to speak had done so. The stick was then passed back to teh leading elder for safe keeping.
Some tribes used a talking feather instead of a talking stick. Other tribes might have a peace pipe, a wampum belt, a sacred shell, or some other object by which they designate the right to speak. Whatever the object, it carries respect for free speech and assured the speaker he has the freedom and power to say what is in his heart without fear of reprisal or humiliation.
