The Labrador region has many great artist and one of them is Annette Campbell Janes is a Labrador Metis artist. Her studio is located in her remote Northern cabin in western Labrador. It is here, surrounded by the magnificent flora wildlife, and northern phenomena, such as the awe inspiring northern lights, that Annette creates her skillfully rendered artwork.It is from these original works that Annette produces her own art cards and prints in various sizes, using lightfast, as well as, archival and lightfast art papers, canvas and pigments. This process ensures that these true giclee reproductions, including the cards, maintain the highest quality images from 25 up to 200 years.The more I travel throughout Labrador the more local crafts I am starting to appreciate and collect from the different regions. The damp Newfoundland weather lends itself to seater shopping . All over the province you can find gorgeous sweaters with colorful designs ....mitts as well . I liked this store on Water St in St John's. Woof Design employs 30 home based knitters in the province. All of the sweaters are handcrafted in Newfoundland homes using domestic knitting machines. There are a number of artist in Labrador. I like the work of Lisa Learning. I have a large framed photographed titled "Catching a Dream", I also provided a picture of it.Born in Goose Bay, Labrador, Lisa Learning is a Metis artist who loves to experience and create various art mediums. Her digital art, caribou hair sculptures, rayograms and photographs are mainly inspired by Labradors northern landscapes and her aboriginal heritage. She has completed a BBA degree at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia as well as a photography diploma at Holland College in PEI.Lisa has her own web site and her work is available in most outlets throughout Labrador.
I thought here I would feature some more of Labrador's arts community. The peice featured in this picture is by Barb Wood. It is the Talking Stick. The talking stick has been used for centuries by many American Indian tribes as a means of just and impartial hearing. The talking stick was commonly used in council circles to designate who had the right to speak. When matters of great concern came before the council, the leading elder would old the talking stick and begin the discussion. When he finished what he had to say he would hold out the talking stick, and whoever wished to speak after him would take it. In this manner teh stick was passed from one individual to another until all who wished to speak had done so. Moulder of Dreams is a community-supported project in Port Hope Simpson to incorporate disabled residents into the workplace. The community has a population of approximately 600 people. About 10% of this population are affected with a severe handicap recognized as "Myotonic Dystrophy" that affects the nervous and muscular system in individuals. In looking for ways to make this responsibility a reality and in connection with Mr. Waymare Harish, an occupational therapist, it was recommended that the creation of a Pottery Industry could meet the therapeutic/medical needs of these individuals. With tremendous support from various funding agencies, the pottery program became a reality for six Myotonic individuals, two challenging needs individuals, a short-term instructor, and a Coordinator to oversee the project. This shop sells a variety of local crafts and other beautiful things for the house. Also some very nice T-shirts and sweats with cute Newfoundland logos.I especially liked the paintings (very colourful, and showing all of Newfoundland's landscapes).Another great shop was the Living Planet - they sell t-shirts with various original designs - it's in Duckworth Street (close to the road that goes up to Signal Hill)
