Kayaking Bonne Bay in Gros Morne Natl. Park, NFLD.
I had recently started sea kayaking the year (2002) that I came out to Newfoundland, but I had never had the opportunity to kayak in such an incredible place as Bonne Bay. Bonne Bay is located within Gros Morne National Park, a UNSECO World Heritage Site. I went out kayaking on a beautiful, sunny June afternoon. With Bald Eagles and Osprey circling overhead, I paddled around the Bay underneath the huge rock face walls lifting hundreds of feet in the air from the bay.Just as my guide was explaining that Bonne Bay was deep enough for whales to swim in, a loud exhaling sound came from our righthand side as a Minke Whale surfaced. The whale repeated this a couple of times before diving again for the bottom of the Bay. That was my first encounter with a "whale."
