The Harbor, St. John's

Leaving from Pier 7 in St Johns Harbour, this boat tour takes you out of the inner harbour in St John's out to the open bay and circles around a few Icebergs that have settled in the area.
Boat trip is 2 hours approx. Bring a jacket even in summer as it can get quite windy out in the open bay!
The skipper will inform you on St Johns famous harbourside buildings etc as we pass and also some info 'bout the bergs themselves and some famous sights along the coast.

Fort Amherst Lighthouse overlooks The Narrows of St. John's Harbour.

The lighthouse is built near the remanents of a derelict fort dating from World War 2. There are the remanents of another older fort that dates to the 1700's.

Fort Amherst Lighthouse is at the base of the South Side Hills, which has a walking trail that leads to Freshwater Bay

Many Newfoundland towns sponsor regattas: Harbour Grace, Placentia and St. John's.

Placentia's regatta occurs in July but the largest regatta is at St. John's; its held on the first wednesday in August, and is called The Royal St. John's Regatta.

The War Memorial Park of St John's is conveniently located in between Duckworth Street and Water Street overlooking the harbour. This place is built to remember those Canadians who perished during the 2 world wars. There are also statues of the Newfoundland dog at this park. This is a good place to relax while you are at St John's.

The Narrows is the small entrance to St John's harbour from the Atlantic Ocean. It can be best seen from St John's harbour and on top of Signal Hill. There is a lighthouse at the Narrows to guide ships into St John's harbour. Remember to visit Fort Amherst, which is located here as well.

St. John's harbour was visited by Corte-Real in 1500. In 1528, King Henery VIII allowed English fishermen to erect and maintain fishing stations at St. John's. By the 1610's, St. John's was a well established village that served the seasonal fishing fleets. St. John's viollage had a permanent population of about one dozen people.
