    mother and calf

We set sail on a clear day at Bay Bulls through it's harbor and onward out to sea. Our hosts were a lively bunch who sang tunes of New Foundland and St. John's throughout our tour. We saw a few Icebergs floating some of them were noticably larger on the underside and liquid blue water shone through the ice as the sun shined on it's icy cold exterior, melting away. Beautiful! We saw many Minky whales but our hosts said to wait until we saw the humpback whales which were the "moneyshot" in picture taking. On this particular day we won the jackpot by happening upon a mother whale and it's calf! They were magnificent as they swam along side each other. Once in a while before they would go deeper underwater, would we get to see a glimpse of their tails. That's what our hosts called the "moneyshot" for picture taking!! Our tour brought us along small islands that were taken over by puffins. Colorful little things with a funny way of flying especially when they would try to fly above or on the ocean, skimming and hobbleing along the water. Truly a wonderful trip and highly recommended! My friend took this trip twice in one week!!

    Jumping Whale

From middle of May to end of July, at Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, about half an hour drive from St. John's, one can have an amazing experience in watching whales, puffins, and striking coastal scenery. The waters of Bay Bulls are home to the world's largest population of whales. In season, one can see humpbacks, minkes, fins, orcas and dolphins leap clear out of water.
