DRL Coachlines

by victorwkf

If you are travelling to St John's from other parts of Newfoundland by coach, then the DRL Coachlines is your only option. There is only one coach from Port Aux Basque to St John's every day and the same goes for the other direction. There are many stops along the way and the fees vary according to the distance travelled. Generally, the coaches are comfortable but be prepared for hiccups such as a flat tire. More information (including schedule and fees) are at the DRL Coachline website below.

Water taxi across Bonne Bay

by victorwkf

If you need to get from the town of Norris Point to Woody Point across Bonne Bay at Gros Morne National Park, the best way is by the water taxi operated by Bon Tours. This is a 15 minute boat ride, and more information are on their official website below. Bon Tours also operate several water tours of Gros Morne National Park, but please note that all these tours and services are not available in late autumn to early spring time.

Provincial Ferry System!

by jamiesno

The Labrador region also relies heavily on the provincial ferry system in the summer and fall seasons. You can come into the Happy Valley - Goose Bay area via Lewisporte using the MV Sir Robert Bond vessel or into the Labrador Straits region via St. Barbe, Newfoundland using the MV Apollo. Depending on your routing or trip plans they are both nice vessels and both offering some spectacular scenary enroute to Labrador.Within Labrador the MV Sir Robert Bond can also be used between the Cartwright and Happy Valley - Goose Bay regions. The MV Northern Ranger will take you from Central Labrador into all of Labrador's northern communities. This is a great trip and affordable. There is one other smaller vessel the MV Challenger I that operated on Labrador's southeast coast and will bring you to the smaller communities of William's Harbour, Pinsent's Arm and Norman Bay.I provided a web site link...

Watch out for moose!

by snaab

Be on the lookout when driving anywhere in Newfoundland. Moose are everywhere, not just in Gros Morne. Collisions with adult moose are often fatal (for you, not necessarily the moose) and even a juvenile moose can total your car! Be especially careful on curvy roads, around dawn/dusk, or in the spring when blackflies can drive moose from the woods.I love how the (completely unhurt) moose is giving a wicked staredown to the crumpled vehicle in its wake.

Winter Roads!!

by jamiesno

In the winter time if you are driving in car it is important to pay close attention to the winter conditions. Heavy snowfalls are common and certain areas especially in the coastal regions can cause havoc and lengthy road closures during the winter season. Here in this picture it looks more like a snow tunnel but there is actually a road there and is in regular use during the winter season.Be sure to check the local weather conditions!!!

Newfoundland by Marine Atlantic Ferry

by snaab

There are a few cabins available on the ferries, but we hadn't booked one not expecting a six hour delay and an overnight trip! We bundled up and slept for a few hours on the top deck, chilly but pleasant after a few of Newfoundland's Black Horse beers in the lounge. Only after watching the sunset during our departure. The ferry is large, and the ocean calm.

Viking Express

by brazwhazz

Viking Express is the name of the only bus service to run the entire Viking Trail, from Corner Brook to St. Anthony, with many stops on the way, including Deer Lake and St. Barbe. It runs north from Corner Brook at 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It leaves St. Anthony at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. On an interesting note, when we went north, it was June (outside the main tourist season), and our bus was in fact a white mini-bus that also doubled as a delivery vehicle. However, when we came back, it was July (start of the main tourist season) and our white mini-bus had turned into a much more comfortable, spacious bus.Seats on the bus must be reserved ahead of time, since the driver only makes scheduled stops. Viking Express' phone number is +1 (709) 634-4710.

Hitch hiking

by crummey

I am not telling any one to go out and hitch hike. I am simply stating that I enjoy hitchhiking. It can be a very good way to see great swaiths of Canada. If you bring a tent and a sleeping bag, you can stay on the road for weeks.
