As it was lunch time, I looked for a place to eat in the Baddeck area. We were just hungry for a sandwich. Then I spotted the HERRING CHOKER along highway #105 just west of Baddeck. It was such a cute little place. You could eat in as they had comfy chairs and little tables to eat your lunch or you could take-out, which is what we did. I ordered two 1/2 corn beef on rye sandwiches from the deli. There were picnic tables on the porch of the Deli and since it was such a beautiful day and there was a lovely view of Bras D'Or Lake, we ate our sandwiches there. The sandwich was HUGE, made with their home-made bread and loaded with corned beef.

They also offer salads and soups (made from scratch), cookies made in their own bakery, imported cheese and deli meats.

St. Michael's Catholic Church

Favorite thing: Located at 511 Chebucto Street, Baddeck, the original ST. MICHAEL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH was completed in 1858. It was lost in the big fire of 1926 but a new church was built on the same site.

Favorite thing: Several buildings in Baddeck are recognized as Historic properties. The most notable is the Gilbert H Grosvenor Hall, the town's former Post Office. The building was constructed between 1885 and 1886. The building also housed the Baddeck Library until the 1980's.
In 1999 the building became home to the BRAS D'OR LAKES INTERPRETIVE CENTRE.

The building is three storeys tall and built of red sandstone excavated from Boularderie, Nova Scotia. It was designed by Thomas Fuller, Chief Architect of Canada and co-designer of Ottawa's first Parliament buildings. Its design is typical of 19th-century Canadian post offices, featuring Romanesque Revival elements. The face of former local Member of Parliament Charles J. Campbell is carved into the stone above the entrance. The clock, located on the west gable, was added in 1912.
