John's Lunch: ~ The Tastiest Fried Clams ~

by RavensWing Written Apr 21, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

John's Lunch is a small - or tiny might be more appropriate - restaurant in Dartmouth. John opened his restaurant in 1969 and has been going strong since. Fotus Fatouros is a co-owner and has been asked how much longer John's Lunch will stay open. He is training his sons and his wife works at this amazing restaurant and he expects at least another 40 years. Funny thing is that John's Lunch was honored for the best fish and chips in Canada Accolade , Fatouros says customers' keep coming back for the clams!

Anytime I am heading down to Halifax I actually plan my flight landing to co-incide with the open hours at John's Lunch. John's Lunch is cozy and welcoming. There are several booths along the wall, and more in the back, designed to fit four adults comfortably. The kitchen at John’s is a bustling hive of frying, grilling and serving. It is fun to watch. The staff are very friendly (and funny) and kept us well entertained while we waited for our food. I must say I liked their sass and some of the regular customers chimed in too which added to the fun, friendly atmosphere. John’s is known for their seafood. They have a wonderful selection: haddock, haddock tips, calamari, scallops, shrimp…and clams. The clam strips are legendary! As seafood is the specialty at John's Lunch, I always order clams and chips. The breading is light and crisp, not too greasy. A word of warning ~ the portions are enormous. Too big for one person really and overflowing off of the plate. My advice is to go to John’s Lunch hungry or think about splitting an order with a friend. Although, when I couldn't finish my meal the waitress helpfully offered reheating tips…leading me to believe people leave with doggy bags on a regular basis.

So what’s the secret to producing Canada’s best fish and chips? A menu, recipes and kitchen processes that have endured the test of time. The recipe has not changed for 40 years. It’s the same flour, baking powder, milk, eggs and haddock tips they've always used, Also the seafood Up to 45kg) is brought in daily from Sambro Fisheries and Fisherman's Market and that the fryer gets cleaned six to eight times a day.

They don't just have fish and chips, there's pizza, burgers, hot sandwiches and everything sells.

There's also a wall that is dedicated to money. I'm not 100% certain behind the begins of the wall, but what I remember being told was that the $1.00 went up on the board as either the first dollar earned or the first tip. As the years of gone on people from all over the world who visit this great place like to leave their money on the wall as their way of saying they have been there.

    ***** A Suggestion *****
If you're going to go for lunch, I suggest you get there a few minutes early. This place packs up so quickly and it doesn't seem to matter what the season is, whether it's freezing, snowing, raining or a beauitful sunny day this place packs up very very quickly. But lack of seating wouldn't stop me from going.

Favorite Dish: My favorite dish is the Deep fried clams, fries and coleslaw. The clams are light and crispy, the fries are always hot and fresh and the coleslaw is creamy and delicious. I proudly admit that I am one of the 'doggy baggers' The plate is always overflowing and way too good to not take home with you when you can't finish the meal.

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Oct 30, 2012

The Celtic Corner is a great pub to visit. Nothing special; come as you are and inhale the atmosphere.

I remember I enjoyed a wonderful soup, that could easily feed a family.
The main course Spaghetti was excellent as well.

Service was like being in a family home.

They serve a good variety of foods but specialize in fresh Nova Scotia seafood. From deep fried clams, scallops, haddick tips, shrimp and crispy battered fish to burgers, hot sandwiches, pizzas, salads, and the list goes on.
The staff are very friendly and helpfull. when you walk in they make you feel right at home.
