Finbar's Irish Pub (Portland Hills): Irish Pub, short on menu, long on taste

by tvor Written Oct 15, 2013

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There has been a Finbar's in Bedford in the Sunnyside Mall for some years and it's good though expensive for a full meal. They've opened a pub in Dartmouth at the Portland Hills bus terminal with lots of free parking. There are two levels and lots of windows. Seems to have a good atmosphere and the staff were quite good considering we were there on a Saturday night and it was packed.

They have some good draft beer and ale selections and whisky selections, maybe a little more expensive for a non-downtown place but the food prices are reasonable. There isn't a lot on the menu, not like the Bedford location but there's something for everyone pretty much and everyone at our table really enjoyed their selections. They have some vegetarian dishes as well as some gluten free dishes or some that can be made veggie/gluten free. The dessert menu is short. A cheesecake of the day, coconut cream pie, sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate brownie dessert. I had the pie and it was awesome. Others shared the cheesecake and said it was pretty good, too.

They didn't take reservations though do have a private room.

Located on the top of the long hill on Portland Street where the bus terminal is. Level access through the doors and main floor.

Favorite Dish: I had macaroni and cheese with grilled chicken added. Sauce perhaps not quite as thick as I like but it was tasty anyway. The coconut cream pie was amazing. The sausage and mash is really good, as is the steak sandwich. The beef stew looks like a very good size portion with creamy mash potato on the top.

    Modern Orchid: Superb Asian Fusion

by tvor Written Oct 15, 2013

This is a fairly new restaurant open in the Dartmouth Crossing retail park on Hector Gate, close to the cinemas. It features Thai, Vietnamese and some traditional Chinese as well. We found the service was very good and the restaurant very comfortable. The food was fresh, hot, and tasted wonderful! You can get milder tasting dishes or spicy ones. Lots of vegetarian opions and they also do free delivery if you live within 4 km and order about 30 dollars minimum. There's quite a lot to choose from and they also have combination dishes (dinners for 1) and dinners for 2 or 3 or 4 at a set "menu".

Favorite Dish: The regular and the Thai hot and sour soups were both amazing. If you've had prawn crackers in the UK at Chinese restaurants there, this place carries something very similar that they call shrimp chips and are served with a peanut sauce. Very tasty as an appetiser to share!

We had the Yang Chow fried rice, the beef on a sizzling plate and Mango Chicken on a sizzling plate. Everything was fresh and hot, no long wait and With taxes and a soft drink, our bill, for two people, came to about 60 dollars (Canadian). We will definitely be going back here again!

    Pilot's Pub: Awesome seafood chowder

by tvor Written Oct 7, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The pub has been open for about 10 years I think but I've only recently tried it. My first visit was about a month ago and the seafood chowder blew me away! Awesome stuff! A large bowl, lots of fish (haddock), shrimp and scallops and a very tasty broth with chucks of potato of course! I loved it so much i had it again the second time I went. I will try some of the other food on future visits. My partner on the second visit had a large double cheese and bacon burger with homemade fries and said it was really good, nice fresh beef. My dining partner the first visit had a club sandwich which was too big for her to eat in one go.

The pub has all the usual pub type food with daily specials and a burger of the week. There's a level access and toilets, free parking and a bus stop out front as well. Apparently they have a good weekend brunch which I am tempted to try as well. They also have a function room for private parties.

    Favorite Dish: Seafood Chowder!

The Wooden Monkey: More Eco food in town

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Jul 18, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Wooden Monkey is a modern restaurant with a great interior (eye for details).
It has an eco-food set-up (organic and macrobiotic food) with a bar at ground level and a restaurant section on the first floor.

The food is somewhat overpriced, but the atmosphere is cosy.

No regular soft drinks or whatsoever; everything is special.

Favorite Dish: The steak (meat @ day price)

Jane's on the common: Me Tarzan you ....

    by pieter_jan_v Updated Jul 16, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sophisticated, that the word I associate with this wonderful restaurant.

I never thought you could find a place like this at this part of Halifax.

I had read about it and knew it was at Robie, but I completely missed it the first time.

Second try was better prepared and I landed in a vivid crowded small restaurant with modern interior and a very busy, but up-to-speed crew.

One of the walls is a big black board with todays's special starters, menu's and desserts.

This is a restaurant with it's own rules on the menu: no pops or soda's.

    The mussels are famous.

    Opening hours:
    Tu-Th: 11AM - 2.30PM & 5PM - 9PM
    Fr: 11AM - 2.30PM & 5PM - 10PM
    Sa: 9.30AM - 2.30PM & 5PM - 10PM
    Sa: 9.30AM - 2.30PM & 5PM - 9PM

    Jane's does not accept reservations.

Most important! On your way back visit the next door " Jane's Next Door" for some delicious pastries.

Favorite Dish: Starter: Baby spinach salad (Made me wonder how big a mature salad would look like)

    Menu: Lamb (excellent stew)

Dessert: NS Apple & Cranberry Crisp (top of the top!)

Ristorante a Mano: Italian by Hand

by tvor Updated Jun 29, 2013

There's a newish Italian restaurant on the Halifax Waterfront in the Bishop's Landing development called Ristoranty a Mano. "a Mano" means "by hand" and Ristorante a Mano means that everything is freshly made, using delicious fresh ingredients. They also have an outside patio for summer eating. The prices are in the mid range, not really expensive but not cheap either. But the prices are justified because the food is really fresh and tasty. The wine and drinks prices are a bit higher than average but I guess that's to be expected for a restaurant like this.

Prices for the main dishes range around the $20 mark with the pastas just a bit less. Appetizers and salads are about $9 - 14 and desserts in a similar range and let me tell you the desserts are melt in your mouth delicious.

The meal was great, the service was very good. It was odd there was no bread on the table at any time. The toilets for men and women consisted of one "stall" for each so there can be queues. The entry is level for accessibility. The decor is semi-casual with flat screen tvs on the walls silently showing Italian films. There are windows covering two of the four walls so there is lots of natural light with the night time lighting a bit subdued.

There is parking available on site and on the surrounding streets though it's still not always easy to find a spot. It's a nice walk along the waterfront if it's a nice night so you could park further down or take the ferry or walk down the hill from Barrington street if coming by bus.

Oh, and they also do takeout on most of their menu items so you can call up and then pick up.

Favorite Dish: I had stuffed crimini mushrooms for a starter with the ravioli and a gelato filled sort of sundae for dessert. Others had pizza though they thought the tomato sauce could have used a bit more spice. Everyone liked what they ordered and we'd definitely go there again! I've chosen the highest price range but it's not the most expensive restaurant around. An appetizer, pasta, dessert, tea, and two drinks with taxes was $65 CAD which isn't that bad.

    Il Mercato: Italian Trattoria

by tvor Updated Jun 29, 2013

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the best Italian restaurants in the middle price range in Halifax, Il Mercato has now two locations in the city. Spring Garden Road and Bedford in the Sunnyside Mall. Quite a good variety of anitpasti, pasta, main dishes, foccacia sandwiches, salads and thin crust pizza on offer. They also do takeout which is convenient. I prefer the Halifax location for the atmosphere, less like a "mall" restaurant. The original Spring Garden Road location really felt like you were in Italy though the newer location is a bit larger, perhaps not as quaint but still decorated quite nicely.

PLEASE NOTE Il Mercato on Spring Garden Road has been renovated and changed to La Frasca with a refreshed menu, though still owned by the same people.

Favorite Dish: thin crust pizza with fresh ingredients
    pasta mmmmmmmmm
    pretty good wine list

Seamus David's Pub: Irish pub in a shopping neighbourhood

by tvor Written Dec 28, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When shopping in the Dartmouth Crossing retail "park" on the Dartmouth Side of the harbour, there's a few restaurants. The "Big Four" are close to the movie theatres (Montana's, Boston Pizza, Swiss Chalet and Jack Astor's) but you get tired of those after awhile. There's a newish pub open called Seamus David's near the boutique store area, and we tried it over the holiday season. The pub is very nice inside, with a large bar and some nice seating areas. Mostly tables for two or four but a couple of larger ones as well for groups. It felt like a nice atmosphere.

Service was fairly good and the food was good as well though i've seen reviews that were only average in their ratings. We had no complaints.

The menu has the usual pub grub and it's maybe a little more expensive than a run of the mill pub but then prices are going up a lot these days. We were there on a Sunday late morning so we had brunch type food which we both enjoyed. We would go back again to see what non-brunch items were like. There's no menu online. It's in a retail store area so there's plenty of free parking in the area. Seems to have level access for entry so is good for anyone with mobility problems.

Favorite Dish: I had eggs benedict and it was cooked exactly the way I requested, served hot and quite tasty. My friend had a Western sandwich and was very pleased with hers as well.
