Ela Greek Taverna: Greek Salad Days
Ela! used to be called Opa which is a Greek phrase for Good Health, Cheers, and Glad to see you all rolled into one! Ela! is also the name of a great Greek restaurant in downtown Halifax. It's on the end of Argyle Street, next to the Argyle Bar and on the corner of Argyle and Blowers Street. The building used to be a bar that closed after many years. Several bars and restaurants tried the location but until Ela! none of them were successful.
Ela! is decorated in true taverna style and has two sections. The back section is in a room with a wall of windows and it's like an atrium. They can open the windows in summer to let the breeze in, too. I believe there are a few steps to get in the building and a few to one part of the restaurant but i think most of the tables are accessible and there's an outdoor patio in the summer.
Prices range from 10 - 18 dollars for lunch, and about double that for various main dishes but the evening menu has many different items and large platters of combinations so you can share and split the bill. Lots of Greek wine will go well with the menu, also, and the desserts are very yummy!
There are now two more locations, one in Dartmouth Crossing and one in Bayers Lake business parks.

ELA! Greek Taverna: The best Greek in town, Opa. Now ELA!
Very popular place where you can have a great Greek dinner while enjoying the neighbourhood action. Nicely located at one of the busiest pedestrian areas. Great food and friendly service.
2012 update: Under new management, but still Greek and with a similar name; ELA!

Opa! Greek Taverna to be renamed ela! Greek Taverna
May 4, 2011 Halifax, Nova Scotia – Opa! Greek Taverna, a successful trio of authentic Greek restaurants with locations in downtown Halifax, Bayer’s Lake, and Dartmouth Crossing, will be known as ela! Greek Taverna, effective immediately.
The change is the outcome of a trademark issue that has been settled, and there will be no other changes as a result that would affect the restaurant’s thriving business.

Ela! (formerly Opa!): New name, same great food!
I've now eaten here under both identities, and I can assure everyone, it's just as good as it always has been!
Opa! is now called Ela! due to some sort of copywrite issue with the name, but it's still amazing Greek food.
Favorite Dish: It's all good Greek standards, but what stands out for me is the feta cheesecake! I've never had this anywhere else, so I thought I should give it special mention.
Opa Greek Restaurant: Lets break dishes! ya!
A really fantastic restaurant with great service, delicious traditional greek food, greek ambiance and decor such as a fig tree as the centerpiece, and a great menu. I got the souvlaki lamb, and it was amazing!
The dessert is a must! try the Kiefta (starts with a K)!
listen for dishes breaking and the opa that follows. lol. inside it is wonderfully ornated in greek style, and atmosphere.
Favorite Dish: lamb souvlaki
Opa Taverna: Opa!
Is a great Greek restaurant in Halifax. It has it's very own olive tree and a lot of great food.
I had the calamari for an appatizer without the batter and I thought that was great. After that I had lamb done on a rotesserarie with their recommended roasted potatos. For dessert I had my favorite Baklavia and this one was an Apple Baklavia so a little bit different. I was there with freinds Tammy, Chris and Greg. All round the restaurant was very good with good service. I didn't have any wine but the Greek sparkling water was nice too!
It's located in the heart of downtown Halifax and it was freezing walking there on a cold January night!!!
Favorite Dish: Baklavia
Opa Greek Taverna: IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME.
Nice place and very popular. It was very busy on the night when we went. Menu was good but a little pricey. The table that we had was small and a bit crammed in unfortunately.
Food was good but we would have enjoyed the meal if things hadn't been so cramped - perhaps we were a little unlucky.
Worth a visit.
Favorite Dish: Updated Jan, 2008.
Went back on our last visit to halifax and had a worse experience. Table was crammed in, service was slow and food average at best. There seamed to be only inexperienced students waiting on table and we waited 25 minutes for a coffee and then it was cold when it arrived. I'm not usually too critical or fussy but I won't be going back to Opa again.

Opa Greek Taverna: Great Greek Exprerience
This restaurant gives an authentic taste of Greek cuisine! It was delicious. Although in the Halifax tourist guide it suggest to reserve only on weekends, I went on a Wednesday and it's a good thing I made a reservation because it was full by 5h30. Be aware that there is no air conditionaing.
Opa Greek Taverna: On the Lamb....
The main dining area is very nice with a huge fig tree decorating the centre space and lots of natural light. The staff is fun and friendly and the food is delicious!! Try the lamb!
