If you walk along Barrington Street or Spring Garden Road (which is very likely), the odds are you will come across St. Mary's Basilica and its impressive spire. According to my visitor guide, it is "the tallest polished (dressed) spire in North America, rising 128 feet above the roof".
If you are interested, there is a small museum behind the altar that explains the history of the church. St. Mary's Basilica is open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ahhh, another place that has a designation.
For those of you who have just started reading my pages, allow me to fill you in. I love structures or sites that can claim to be the tallest, highest, shortest, largest, smallest, fattest, oldest, heaviest…etc. So, I was particularly delighted to find that St. Mary’s Basilica has the “tallest, polished granite spire” in North America. To be honest, I didn’t even know what a spire was before I read about this, but it didn’t take me long to appreciate it! It’s quite a spire and in fact, the rest of St. Mary’s is impressive as well.
Um...this may be a stupid question, but I don't know much about religious structures: What's the difference between a steeple and a spire?

St. Mary's Basilica was built in 1820 and is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in all of Canada. Built in the Gothic style, it is one of Halfax's most impressive buildings and admission is free.
