If you rely heavily on the evil weed you will find this place tough. The websites say there are areas set aside for smokers this is not a common practice. Some bars do have outside seating but these are packed in summer so you may not get a seat outside. Most bars have traditional music played by live bands, most bars have a cover charge for this but it is not much, a few dollars and the music makes your evening more enjoyable.
The dress code in most places is casual. Always carry a fleece even in summer the weather can change very quickly Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Downtown Halifax

The Historic Properties are a great place to go in the evening to enjoy some live bands. This is a busy place with children, tourists and locals all enjoying the hand clapping, toe tapping Maritime music. Join in the fun, sit down and people watch, have a drink in one of the many bars around this part of town and enjoy the free entertainment.
As casual as you like Leave a Comment

Ceilidh (photo courtesy of website) by Redlats It is amazing how omnipresent music is on Cape Breton. We heard more than once that instead of giving a crying baby a rattle, parents give the baby a fiddle -- perhaps this explains why every Cape Bretoner can play or sing or dance. As a result, there are many gatherings with singing and dancing to traditional Scottish or Irish music and storytelling. These are called ceilidhs [pronounced káylee] The first evening we were on Cape Breton, we attended a ceilidh at the Creamery in Port Hawkesbury. These ceilidhs are held there every Tuesday night during tourist season. Ceilidh's are community projects - the performers are local musicians, and include such Cape Breton performers as Natalie MacMasters or the Men of the Deep (who we just missed by a week). Ceilidh's are held throughout Cape Breton during tourist season. We attended two -- the one in Port Hawkesbury and another in Louisburg. Admission for adults ranged from $7 to $14 Cdn.
