    GETTING TO PEGGY'S COVE

From Halifax International Airport follow Highway 102 Southbound to Exit 3 and turn left on Highway 213. Follow 213 to the end, then explore this picture-postcard area via Route 333, Highway 3, and Route 329.

From Halifax take the St Margarets Bay Road to the Prospect Road exit and turn left on route #333 or take Highway 103 to Exit 5 and follow the signs to discover St. Margaret's Bay and the surrounding communities.

From Yarmouth take Highway 3 and spend a day meandering along our scenic Lighthouse Route. Or drive the Highway 103 part-way, and then take any one of the convenient exits to follow the Lighthouse Route. Or, if time is of the essence, drive highway 103 to Exits 7, 6, or 5 and then savor this stunning coastal region.

There is very little public transportation to the area. If you arrive via cruise ship limosines and taxis meet the ships on arrival and will take you to Peggy's Cove but, other than that, a car is necessary.

Hans and I arrived by car. We came from the west, driving along Route #3. We got off at Exit 5 at the #333 at Upper Tantalon, passing through the villages of Glen Haven, French Village and Indian Harbour (where we stopped at the Lobster Pound).
After visiting Peggy's Cove we continued on the #333 towards Halifax

How to get there by car?

    Peggys Cove

Peggys Cove lies 43 kilometers southwest of Halifax on Route 333 which is part of the Lighthouse Route. To get there from Halifax, take Highway 103 Exit 2B to Route 333. It is about an hour drive. There is a parking area with washrooms on the edge of the village. There is another parking area near the lighthouse, which is usually more crowded.

Peggys Cove is a popular destination and many tour buses arrive in the middle of the day. To avoid the crowds, the best time to visit in summer is before 10 AM or after 4 PM.

If you want a customised tour to visit famous places outside Halifax (such as Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove etc) which is operational all year around, I would recommend the Tall Tale Tours. They have customised tours from 1 to 6 people to famous places around Halifax and you can contact Mr Robert Young at tel: (902)8309179 or email talltaletours@ns.sympatico.ca

Robert is very friendly and I enjoyed the trip very much. The car used is also very spacious and comfortable (see photograph).

Going to Peggy's Cove by car

Road to Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia

If you are driving to Peggy's Cove, the journey takes about 1 hour from Halifax and there is not much traffic. The terrain is rather flat so it should not pose any problems except for the occasion animal. During winter, there will be snow or ice, so be very careful.

Lighthouse Route - One of Canada's Best Drives

    by RB_Oakes Written Apr 15, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Peggy's Cove is situated on the Lighthouse Route, which is one of the best drives in Canada. The Route is comparable in vistas and technical driving to the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Vancouver and Squamish in British Columbia. Rent a car if you're just visiting Halifax, but make sure you rent a good one, with serious handling. Don't get stuck behind anybody. If you love driving, you'll love going to Peggy's Cove.
