Beaches and Provincial Parks

by tvor

Nova Scotia is almost completely surrounded by water so it stands to reason there will be a lot of beautiful ocean beaches. Some have picnic facilities, toilets and canteens. Some are hugely popular and generally always crowded and some are a bit further away but worth the drive. Many have supervised areas. Warmer waters can be found along the Northumberland Straight. Watch the tides though, the currents can be dangerous in some areas. If there are signs up, take notice. They're not there for decoration. Some of the provincial parks have camping facilities. Nova Scotia also has lots and lots of lakes with beaches. My personal favourite ocean beach in the Halifax area is Martinique Beach and bird sanctuary. wooded and open picnic areas. Long sandy beach, really nice and worth the drive. Near Musquodoboit Harbour, down East Petpeswick road. My favourite lake beach is Birch Cove on Lake...

Oaklawn Farm Zoo

by tvor

A surprising little find in the Annapolis Valley at Aylesford. There is a small zoo with many exotic animals in natural settings for the most part. There are cages around the large cats and some others but most of the enclosures are open. There's a petting zoo for the kids as well. Prices currently at $6.50 per adult, $4.00 for seniors, less for children. No family rates. There are picnic areas and a gift shop on site.

Rushton Provincial Park

by Redlats

We found a beach! At this provincial park, one had to cross a long boardwalk over a salt-water marsh -- once past the marsh, there was a long stretch of beach with many sandbars - where one could walk in the warm ocean water, pretending that there was not a cold wind, but a nice summer breeze blowing by.I had just assumed that the whole north shore of Nova Scotia would be a sand beach like I remember in PEI, but very little of Nova Scotia shoreline is sand beach. For some reason, we were quite surprised by this.

Point Aconi lighthouse

by sim1

Point Aconi lighthouse is close to Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a white conical lighthouse with a red octagonal lantern. This light is operational and the grounds are open to the public. It is a strange to visit this lighthouse. On the picture it looks so beautifully set on the cliff, but when you are at the lighthouse it is much less pictoresque. There is a mine close by and the outlet of the mine is right next to this lighthouse. When you are at the lighthouse all you can hear is the vent of the mine, which makes a tremendous noise. From the distance it is a beautiful lighthouse to see though. Directions:At Highway 105 the Bras d`Or Lakes Scenic Drive turns left across a bridge. Just after crossing the bridge, a right turn off Highway 105 leads to the Point Aconi Lighthouse.

Lighthouse at Cape Breton

by sim1

I saw this little lighthouse in a little village in Cape Breton National park in Nova Scotia. I not only enjoyed the lighthouse but even more the little pictoresque harbour that was right underneath it. There were only a few fisherman still at work, because it was getting evening already. The eveninglight was beautiful and we couldn`t stop our camera`s from clicking. Totally taken by this little harbour and the fishing boats we almost forgot to take a picture of the lighthouse. But you can still see it, hidden behind this fishing boat :-)

Peggy's Cove

by sim1

This lighthouse is one of the most famous lighthouses in the world. The location is really stunning! It is situated on the cliffs of a really pictoresque fishing village : Peggy`s Cove in Nova Scotia, Canada. Because it is so pictoresque it is really flooded with tourists! But I loved my visit here. I didn`t expect I would, I thought I would hate it because it was swamped by the tourists. But when you get on those great big rocks and watch how the sea is banging against the coast, the sheer power of nature, wow! You really have to be impressed! When you don`t like the tourists, just walk a little further on the cliffs. There are not a lot of people that do that, and that way you can enjoy this piece of nature almost by yourself. The lighthouse is not only so famous because of it`s location, but also because it is a postoffice. And yes, I did it too!!!! I posted my cards from here, LOL....

Tidal Bore at Anthony Provincial Park

by Redlats

Just past Truro on the shores of the Bay of Fundy we watched the tides come in. It is pretty amazing. Within a few minutes the sea-weed-covered field in front of us went from brown mud to being full of brown water. The other thing about this park is that in September there are quite a few trees with apples - not very good apples - lots of worms, etc. I tried to chew on a couple (apples, not worms), and was amazed by how salty they were. I guess the constant wind and tides blow a salt mist on the apple trees. You can see the height of each wave (approx. 1 foot high). This effect is heightened depending on how narrow the bay is where you are (its higher in Truro and Moncton, NB).If you happen to be going by the Bay of Fundy at high tide, by all means stop and watch the tide come in, but I would not go out of my way to see it. High tide comes twice a day (approximately 12 hours apart), and...

Rita's Tea Room

by Redlats

While driving back to the Canso Causeway from Louisbourg, I was instructed to stop in Big Pond - home of Rita's tea room.Rita MacNeil is a local singer/song writer who is somewhat famous on Canadian TV. At her concerts and TV variety shows, she invites fans over for tea. The building is a former school, converted to a residence, then to a tea house.Inside, besides ordering high tea and dainties, my wife spend a long time checking out the displays on her recording career - the gold records, etc. Of course, you could purchase all her CD's and other nick-nacks in the gift store.

Leave yourself at least 2 hrs for this. A wonderful place on the Halifax waterfront that has the largest collection of Titanic relics and memories anywhere. Maritime history and lore that will facinate anyone and spawn new interest in those who have never seen such things before!
