After surfing the net and consulting "Doers & Dreamers Guide available from www.novascotia.com (Good Guide/Good site)
We booked 2 nights in Antigonish and 2 in Port Hawkesbury...........bad move............the hotels we stayed in are part of the Maritime Inns Group but do not hold a candle to the others in Pictou & Baddeck far nicer places to stay...........travel the extra mile....miss out 2 nothing towns with nothing to offer!
Unique Suggestions: Get in the car and go on the Ceiidh Trail
Go and see Antigonish University only thing worth doing.
Fun Alternatives: Go to Baddeck or Ingonish or indeed both
Most tourists to Nova Scotia end up at Peggy's Cove, to see both the lighthouse and the tiny fishing village among the rocks. But there are many, many other beautiful lighthouses and landscapes in the province.
If you are staying in the Halifax area and have the option, go for a coastal drive around the Aspotogan Peninsula, or to Sambro, or along the Eastern Shore to Fisherman's Cove (just ask a local, there are tonnes of choices) and witness the less tourist-y areas on your own. Sometimes the buses and crowds at Peggy's Cove make it seem more like an amusement park than a working fishing village.
Unique Suggestions: Check out the post office operating out of the Peggy's Cove lighthouse...
Take a short drive over the the Swiss Air flight 111 memorial site.
Fun Alternatives: Chebucto Head, about 1/2 hour drive from Halifax, is a working lighthouse along a rugged cliff and you'll rarely ever find tourists there! The lightkeeper's home (vacant at the time) just recently burned down but the views are incredible and you'll often see whales below.
Also you can stop and see York Rideout, an old fort, along the way.
This place is overpriced. The are nice places to stay in Halfax that are cheaper than this.more
