  • One of my favourite memories of Brantford is of last year. My brother has his pilot's lisence and we went flying over Brantford. It was a beautiful day and I got some great pictures, which you can view in my 'Flying Over Brantford' travelogue.

    "Canadian Tire Money" - Is not Canada's national currency but Canadian Tire is a large franchise store throughout. This money can only be used at Canadian Tire stores and gas stations, although some stores will accept it.

    "Pogey" - A term used to describe collecting Employment Insurance.

    "Poutine" - No nutritional value whatsoever, Poutine is comprised of french fries, a particular sort of gravy; and mozarella cheese, fattening but amazing.

    "Toonie" - The Canadian $2 coin.

    "Loonie" - The Canadian $1 coin.

    "Toque" - Like the American knit hat.

    "Two-four" - As in a 24 case of beer. Which reminds me, our beer is much more potent than in America and more expensive.

    "Timmy Hos" or "Tims" - As in Tim Hortons Coffee.

    "Kraft Dinner" - a.k.a. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese to Americans. No difference between what's in the boxes, just what's on them. Canadians eat a lot of KD. Referred to in some areas as "rubber bullets."

    "Timbits" - from Tim Hortons, are round balls of doughnuts.

    "Eh" - has no meaning really. Often is at the end of sentences, as in, "So you're from the South Eh?"

    Brantford is famous for their flowers and foliage and is even the past award winner of the nationwide, "Communities in Bloom" projects.

    A compliment to our gorgeous trails with bridges and winding paths, our parks are filled with rose gardens, lush greenery and an amazing array of flowers in every colour during the spring, summer and fall.

    Lorne Bridge Park in West Brant is always adorned with some of the most impressive open gardens around that flies the provincial flags during the summer.
