Shows start on the hour, first at 10am was in Japanese! and the last at 4pm. We arrived with our vouchers at 3:50pm. By the time we had got to the front of the queue the show had started and we were not able to get in:( In the end there were other things to do so we missed this.
The second largest falls
This is another picture taken at the Imax theatre. You can clearly see the huge amount of water that thunders down at the Horseshoe Falls. The Niagara Falls is the second largest falls on the globe next to Victoria Falls in Africa, a waterfall that is on my wish list to see one time in my life.
Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic
The movie we watched was the Falls Movie "Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic". The movie takes about 45 minutes and tells about the history of the Niagara Falls, all the way back to 12.000 years ago. It is nice in a way, you get some nice views over the falls. But like I said in the previous tip, it was not really my kind of thing.
They show several other movies as well, but the Falls Movie seems to be the most popular one and is showed very often. The entrance to the Imax Theatre will cost you $12.00 (CAD) for ages 13 - 64 (in 2004). You can read more about the entrance fee on their website :
Here is an impression of a scene out of the movie. I took this photo while watching the movie, hahaha, that might give you some idea of how captured I was by it :-))
Quite a big part of the movie is about Annie Tayler, who was the first daredevil to go over the Niagara Falls in a barrel. She miraculously survived, together with her cat that allegedly was with her in the barrel.
Annie Tayler was a 63 year old teacher and went over the Niagara Falls October 24, 1901. The reason why she made this attempt was to try and become famous. Her comment after her attempt was "No one ought to ever do that again" a wise conclusion I would say, but not everyone seems to think like that. Many other daredevils followed her example and crawled into a barrel to go over the falls. Unfortunately not all of them survived that trip.
On a cold cold winter day like this you probably get desperate in looking for a warm place to sit down and be entertained. That was our idea, so we went to the Imax theatre to warm up and watch the big screen movie about the Niagara Falls. Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, it isn't that spectacular to be thruthful, just 'okay'. So I don't think I would repeat this visit for a second time. We did get warm though, hahaha, so part of the visit was a great success :-)
This is the barrel of George Stathakis who went over the falls on the 4th of July 1930. The Daredevil Exhibit is nothing spectacular to see. But as the entrance is for free you might drop in for a quick visit when you are here anyway. I wouldn't make a detour for it though! I guess you just have to decide for yourself. It is not my kind of thing, but you might enjoy it.
The Niagara Daredevil Exhibit is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
This is the barrel of Dave Munday, which you can see at the Daredevil Exhibit. After a visit to the Imax theatre you will pass this exhibit and you can take a look inside. The entrance to the exhibit is free, even if you haven't been to see a movie at the Imax theatre.
Dave Munday was crazy enough to go over the falls twice.... and survived! Wow, hahaha, if you ask me that is a really crazy thing to do!
We visited the Imax theatre during our stay, it consists of a small museum area, which has the barrells and things that people went over the fallas in, then you go through and watch the film.
If nothing else, it actually reveals to you the true strength and force of the falls.
The falls - on the big screen
We really enjoyed the Imax movie. It had a little bit about the history of the Falls, re-enactments of some of the daredevils who have gone over the falls, and of course some wonderful up-close video that puts you right on the brink of the Falls. The Daredevil Museum is located at the exit of the Imax theater and is no extra charge. It features the actual contraptions that people have used to go over the falls in, and a few replicas. A little information is included about each contraption, telling you what it is made of, how the daredevil prepared, and if they survived or not. A combo ticket is available that gets you a ticket to the Imax movie plus entrance to the Skylon Tower observation Deck.

IMAX THEATRE AND DAREDEVIL...
IMAX THEATRE AND DAREDEVIL MUSEUM
Of course nothing can compare with the Falls themselves, but in living color on a six story screen comes pretty close. The 40 minute film is very well done and tells alot about the history and legends of Niagara. Be sure to go to the left after buying your tickets - we followed the signs to the right and missed the film and had to come back for another show. To the right is the National Geographic store (be sure to buy a copy of the film to view at home) and the daredevil museum. You can see all the barrels that have gone over the Falls and read about the people who were in them. My six year old was fascinated by this and spent 45 minutes there.
