    Queen Street
    by LoriPori
Popular attractions unto themselves, the shops of the picturesque Heritage District of Niagara-on-the-Lake are located in well-preserved buildings dating back to 1817. The grand boulevard of QUEEN STREET anchors this shopping area, lined with gorgeous floral plantings, historic sites and the three theatres that house the Shaw Festival. Queen Street and the adjoining side streets and courtyards, contain small, individually owned businesses where the merchandise is unique, offering everything from fashionable attire, jewellry, art and giftware to local wines and Niagara culinary products.

Hans and I had the pleasure of strolling along Queen Street. I thoroughly enjoyed window-shopping as there was so much variety.

    St. Andrew's
    by LoriPori, 2 more photos
Located at Simcoe at Gage Street is SAINT ANDREW'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Sunday Services is at 11:00 a.m.
I will quote from the plaque located in front of the church, which tells a little bit about its history. "Presbyterians formed a congregation at Niagara in 1794 with John Dun as resident minister. Within a year they had built a church and by 1802 a schoolhouse. American troops burned the church during the War of 1812 claiming that British soldiers had used the steeple as an observation post. The congregation held services in the schoolhouse until 1831 when under the leadership of the Reverend Robert McGill they built the church. Restored but little altered, St. Andrew's is a splendid example of Greek Revival architecture. The Church interior, classically Georgian in design, retains the original high pulpit and box pews."

    NIAGARA DISTRICT COURT HOUSE

  • Niagara District Court House - Niagara-on-the-Lake
    Niagara District Court House
    by LoriPori, 2 more photos
This is the third and only surviving Court House erected for the former Niagara District . Constructed between 1846 and 1848, it was designed by a prominent Toronto architect in neoclassical style favoured for 19th century public buildings. Located on Queen Street, the NIAGARA DISTRICT COURT HOUSE or Le Palais de Justice du District de Niagara, became the Town Hall in 1862. Restored in 1981as the town's bicentennial project, the building houses a refurbished Lord Mayor's Chambers, the Chamber of Commerce and Parks Canada offices. During the Shaw Festival season, an intimate 327 seat theatre operates from within the Court House.

Built in 1903, the LIGHTHOUSE marks the entrance to the Niagara River. Standing only 45 feet tall, it is constructed of wood and has a bright red light on top. Still in use today to aid ships with navigation.
On location is also a water sampling lab servicing the Niagara region.

Make sure you stop by the visitor center for some good maps, coupons and information. Located on main street on the same side as the Prince of Wales Hotel a few blocks down, look careful because you have to walk down some stairs next to a building, just look for this sign and head down the steps. The people are very nice and helpful and willing to answer any questions you may have, you can also exchange money here.

    Niagara on the Lake Lighthouse
    by tpangelinan
This cute little lighthouse was built in 1903 marking the entrance to the Niagara river from Lake Ontario. It stands only 45 feet tall and has a red/orange light on top, it's sister lighthouse is located down stream at the entrance of Lake Erie at Fort Erie and is 15 feet shorter than this one. Both lighthouses are still used to this day for shipping navigational aids. They each have a water sampling lab that tests the water quality and toxins of the Niagara River since about 1975 and a full lab was installed in 1988, the sister lighthouse had been testing since 1983.

I have never seen such a cool looking water fountain, it looks so antique. I don't know I just liked it and wanted to share it with the class. You would never find any thing like this around our way and if one did exist it would have graffiti or would have been distroyed long ago by the kids that have nothing better to do than get in trouble. It's nice to see a town that doesn't seem to have these type of issues.

Well here you can see that this Cenotaph is in the middle of the road , but it is easy to get to ,nobody in this pretty town seems to be going very fast ,because there is so much to see and most people here are tourist and visitors .There is plenty of room to stand in front of the Cenothaph and pay your respect to the fallen soldiers.
