    The Moose: The Moose

    The Moose (2005)

What can I say about something on Main Street that is supposed to look like a log cabin? The wings are good. This is the place to go for chicken wings in North Bay. The decor is, well, rustic; it's wooden-log interior is decorated with snowshoes, skis, animal pelts, stuffed fish, and (yep!) a big real moose head. Animal-rights activists may want to avoid this restaurant. Hunters, on the other hand, may find the atmosphere relaxingly familiar. Large projection-screen televisions are permanently tuned to the sports channels. There is so much wood inside the Moose it reminds me of a tinderbox--this is the last place I'd ever want to be if there was a fire.
The menu consists primarily of pub-type roadhouse fare--hamburgers, chicken burgers, french fries, salads, wraps, ribs, roasted chicken, and wings with about 50 varieties of sauces.
Service is quick and friendly, but the actual delivery of the meal can sometimes be very slow. They also tend to get large or complicated orders wrong--so keep it simple.
A word about the chicken wings: They're very large--almost closer to the size of KFC than your standard wing.
The Moose is open for lunch and for dinner. The lunch crowd consists, surprisingly enough, of local office workers and businessmen.
They serve food late for a North Bay restaurant, until after midnight. On weekends they have a DJ and try to be a nightclub.

Favorite Dish: Fatboy chicken wings, poutine, carrot & celery sticks, with a Corona.

Jaeger Meisters European Eatery & Caterer: Jaeger Meisters

by Kaspian Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Jaegermeisters (2005)

Jaeger Meisters is what happens when the head chef at the fanciest hotel in town quits her job to open her own diner-style restaurant. The goal of "Jeager's" is to serve gourmet and classically inspired cuisine in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. They do deliver on this promise. Fancy foreign dishes the average person in North Bay never would have been able to imagine or experience 3 years ago are now served up quickly at a reasonable price. Dishes such as "Spanish tapas", "spiced pumpkin and coconut soup", and "Martinique blaff" are all examples of what you may find being served on a normal specials menu. But, if your tastes don't delve into the gourmet, you can go basic--design your own custom smoked-meat or vegetarian sandwich (with some of the finest meats this side of Montreal) with a simple soup, such as tomato. The decor is very cool and funky--eclectic art, antiques, soft lighting, crazy art-nouveau chandeliers, cakes and quiche on display, and you can watch the cooks prepare some of the food. I recommend you make reservations if there are more than 2 in your party.
Every meal I've ever had at Jaeger's has been fresh and fantastic.

    Greco's Pizza & Pasta: Greco's

by Kaspian Updated Mar 28, 2008

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Greco's is a North Bay institution. Every former North Bayer who's under 40 and returning to our city for a visit, makes sure to include at least one meal at Greco's during their stay.
Greco's was originally founded as a bakery in 1913 by Oscar Greco. His son, raised in the bakery, opened it as a pizza shop in 1969.
The unique baking ovens and natural grain-crust recipes create a very distinct and tasty pizza. People end up craving Greco's so badly the restaurant has been known to Fed-Ex pizza deliveries to other countries. I can tell you honestly that you've never had anything quite like it. The "deluxe" pizza is my favourite, but sometimes I experiment with different toppings.
Everything else on the menu is fantastic too. The pasta is freshly made every morning in the store. The same goes for the pasta sauces.
My only complaint is that there have been some very slow and inattentive wait staff working there lately.

Favorite Dish: My favourite dishes are: deluxe pizza, garlic bread with mozzarella and cheddar cheese, turkey pita with black olives, BLT pita, quesadillas with tomato and olives, fettuccini alfredo. It's all great!

Twiggs Coffee Company: Twiggs Coffee Company

    Twiggs (2005)

Twiggs gets bonus points for being locally owned, selling organic fair-trade coffees, and for having the only real outdoor coffee patio in North Bay.
The coffee, tea, and chai varieties are good, the ambiance is comfortable, and the staff is courteous (and very good looking to boot.)
The "lunch specials" are always good--the smoked meat or lox on a bagel served with a hot soup is just about one of the best sandwich lunches in town, especially on a cold day.
The only criticism I have about Twiggs is that they have to keep it cleaner--scrub the floors (hard) and dust the ceilings every now and then.
2009 Update: They've finally cleaned the place and redecorated. Kudos to Twiggs!

Favorite Dish: Montreal smoked meat on a bagel with soup. Even the sight of the "Rolo Cheesecake" seems to make my women friends go weak in the knees.

    Ivan's: Ivan's

    Ivan's (2005)

Ivan's is the only 50s-themed restaurant we have in North Bay. And it's the only place, as far as I know, that has a working jukebox. In the last few years, they've started to add some of that "country-cottage" type of decor, stuff I call "wicker-junk". I have no clue as to why they’ve done this because it makes the restaurant look kind of bizarre--imagine retro-50s mixed with a farmhouse.
Sometimes the girl working at the cash looks a little bit cranky, but don't be fooled, she's actually soft-spoken and very polite. Food is served is very quick and it's always good and hot. This is an amazing place to go after a day at the beach or when you're really hungry and need something heavy and filling to go in your stomach fast.

Favorite Dish: Pogos (AKA "pronto pups" or "corn dogs"), poutine (fries with gravy and cheese), burgers, and milk shakes.

Graffittis Ristorante: Best Italian food in North Bay

by hacketl Updated Jun 29, 2010

Ate there last night and had a fabulous meal. Great decor, service and quality of food. It was like eating in Italy. I will definately go back and tell everyone I know to go there.

Favorite Dish: I had the lasagna and others had chicken parmigiana and chicken wings. The bruchetta was to die for.

Greco's Pizza and Pasta: A North Bay institution

by Haverchuck Written Nov 14, 2005
    Greco's on Algonquin Avenue

Greco's has great, afforable food (mainly italian, but also has a Mexican menu), cool atmosphere, good music and attractive staff (both female and male). It's my favourite restaurant in North Bay and is something of a hangout and employer to the city's hipsters and musicians.

Favorite Dish: The Gourmet Pizza is fantastic.
