Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (5) I guess every town or city's main downtown is worth a look, right? Ours is nothing extraordinary for a place this size--not overly pretty and not exceptionally ugly. It's a shame that many of the oldest buildings in the downtown core have burned down in the last few years. I put the blame squarely on the landlords and inspectors for not changing 100-year old wiring. Most of the stores are geared towards what I call "country cottage junk"--things like candles, wicker baskets, wooden ducks, straw doormats, etc. There are some exceptions; some peculiar and unique shops you should check out while downtown. Of note are: "Allison The Bookman", one of North America's largest used bookstores; "Omer's Pawn Shop" which is expensive but packed to the ceiling with weird stuff; "Greco's Pizza", yummy unique Italian food; "Lefebvre's Outdoor Sports" and "Vested Interest"--a sports/hunting store connected through the back to an import store; and finally the North Bay Area Museum, to learn a little about our rail history. The Waterfont... What did all these North Bayers do with their time before we had the Waterfront? On a nice day you'll find all walks of life here enjoying the parks, the beach pathways, benches, flower gardens, and stunning view of Lake Nipissing. Tables of seniors gather to have dinner while kids on skateboards whizz by; the seniors shake their heads in disapproval. People sit alone on giant rocks and gaze out across the lake, lost in their own thoughts and dreams. Couples carry their children to the snack van to order pogos, burgers, and fries. Boat enthusiasts raise their sails and holler to each other from the decks of their vessels. Sunworshippers--bronze bikini-clad women soak rays while their buff boyfriends play frisbee in the sand on Marathon Beach. Wedding parties huddle in front of lush floral gardens to pose for group photos. Tourists gather to wait for the "Chief Commanda II" cruise ship to blow its departure horn, raise its anchor, and set out for the Manitoulin Islands. In-line skaters and cyclists exercise and zoom down the Kate Paceway path. Kids holler in glee as they ride a restored carousel and a miniature train. The Waterfront's a lively place! Hiking for all ages. My father and I took my 2 young girls out to Duchesnay Falls. It was wonderful. It was a short hike but being we a retiree and 2 toddlers with us it was just enough! I'm sure there was way more I could have done being with other company but this is all I can relate to for now! There is NO Swimming though so don't get your hopes up they are falls not rapids! Address: HWY 17 edge of townDirections: Going towards Sudbury you will come to the outskirts of the town. It is very close and there is only one small green sign stating Duchesnay Creek (I believe) so keep your eyes open.
