by rsilva Beavertails are a traditional Canadian (from Ottawa, if I am not mistaken) kind of pastry. A piece of dough is moulded into the shape of a Beaver's tails (a process similar to the making of a pizza base) and then it is fried. After that you can put any kind of topping on it. I tried three kinds: chocolate, cinnamon and sugar and apple cinnamon. They were all very good. They taste great on a cold day and are quite inexpensive. My satays & peanut sauce and Sue's red curry dish by Bwana_Brown, 1 more photos The only other time we had stopped for an overnight stay in Ottawa was 13 years earlier, while driving through to Petawawa, Ontario. During that visit we had taken our children to lunch at the Royal Thai restaurant and it was such a great meal that Sue and I have talked about it ever since! On our second day in the city on this latest trip, we knew our free-time was going to be limited so we set out for a morning walk around Parliament Hill to take in the attractions. Finishing that, we found ourselves back in the ByWard Market area that is full of restaurants and, as I looked at my watch, it was only a few minutes to noon on a Friday of a long weekend (Thanksgiving in Canada). I could see from our map that the Royal Thai was nearby, so we decided to give it another try before the office lunch crowds swarmed us. The place was not very full when we entered and were quickly ushered to a table for two, but it soon filled up just after we managed to get our order in.
The Royal Thai has a lunch menu that features four or five different pre-set combos, so we thought we had better stick to something they are ready to dish up in a hurry as the crowd continued to pour in. I went with C$12 option 'B' - "Hot & Sour Shrimp soup, Spring Roll, three Chicken skewers with peanut satay, steamed Jasmine rice and Coconut jelly" for dessert. Sue decided on C$10 option 'C' - "Hot & Sour Vegetable soup, Spring Rolls with vegetables, Mixed vegetables with Red Curry" as well as rice and jelly dishes identical to mine. For drinks, I went authentic with two bottles of Thai Singha amber beer while Sue had two glasses of their house white wine. The waiters were working fast and efficiently, bringing first our soup dishes, then the Spring Rolls followed by the main courses and rice, with dessert bringing up the rear. We shared our main courses and everything was cooked and tasted perfect. The portions were just the right size and the flavours were amazing and subtle. The Royal Thai had not lost a step in those intervening 13 years! Our total costs with a tip came to C$41 (US$36). I have eaten a lot of Thai meals over the years and this one is still the best for both flavour and value! Colonnade Pizza,Ottawa,Ontario,Canada by Greggor58 This is the BEST pizza place in town....Ive been going here for years....mostly on Friday nights a couple of times a month... Its a busy spot....DONT arrive after 6 and NOT expect to wait...we usually roll in around 5:45 and have no difficulty grabbing a table right away... Collonade's decor is clean and somewhat contemporary....but has a limited menu...large selection of Pizza.....and a not so diverse selection of other choices...the usual pasta and salad selections but theyre focus is Pizza. It does a BOOMING take-out business also...and always a crowd of people waiting for pick up... There are a number of locations aorund the Metro but I ALWAYS go to the Metcalfe Street location. Its the original spot and old habbits are sometimes hard to break..
I stick with the regular combo....mushrooms,pepperoni,green peppers...its all about the cheese and the sauce...almost always prepped with just the right combinations of everything... The Collonade "special" is always a great "second" choice for me...its sweet ham, onions, and broccoli...a great flavour combination. My buds RAVE about the "Mediteranean"...feta cheese, onions, red peppers and black olives, and artichokes.

Elgin Street Diner,Ottawa,Ontario,Canada by Greggor58, 1 more photos This is easily located on one of the main streets in the downtown core...a short cab ride or nice stroll from the center of the downtown core. Its easy to get to ...open 24/7 and no security issues in or around the neighborhood that its situated in.. This medium sized diner provides quick and friendly service and GREAT breakfasts as well as the usual variety of diner type foods...its got a busy breakfast rush....and given that they serve they're breakfast menu all day it can be busy during the weekend straight through until mid afternoon. The dinner rush starts around 1730 and is also quite busy . Ive never had to wait long for a table. The atmosphere is informal and attracts an interesting mix of customers and is clean and comfortable.
Breakfasts include the usual pancakes with fruit or plain and real Maple syrup ...blueberry, banana,strawberry...if youre into bacon and eggs they do this too and normaly serve a side of baked beans and or homefries, pemeal or back bacon is available also....all you need to do is ask. They also serve the usual cheeseburgers and fries and if you're really adventurous try the Poutine...originating in Quebec ,a combination of french fries and cheese curds soaked in gravy...ummm...you be the judge! Sandwiches ,meat loaf ,pastas and milkshakes are also yours for the asking...

Slow Roasted Leg of Goose by anneliesemack This is a great new restaurant. It is so unique because it serves aboriginal food such as Hunter's Mixed Grill (quail, rabbit sausage and caribou), Rabbit Stew, Smoked Duck Breast Salad and Peppered or Grilled Buffalo Steak. The menus change four times a year, with the seasons. Everything is done in house, including the desserts which range from Creme Brulee to Molten Chocolate Bomb! The ambience is relaxed aided by native tunes in the background and walls adorned with native art (for sale). This is a great place to check out!
My absolute favorite dish in this restaurant is the Stuffed Lake Trout, stuffed with wild rice, mushrooms, cranberries and served with haricots verts and fire roasted tomato sauce. Ive "labeled" New Mee Fung as a Pho restaurant but in fact the menu is more diverse than just Pho...they "specialize" in roll-ups too...a platter that comes with rice paper, vermicelli, piles of fresh basil, cilantro and bean sprouts. You can order with bbq pork, beef, or bbq shrimp. The decor is quite simple and the atmosphere busy. The service is quite good and if you're there before 6:00 you likely wont have to wait long for a table. Its always a great spot to have a quick meal with some different flavours. They're CLOSED on Tuesdays......I've often forgotten this and have been reminded the hard wayyy..
I normally will just have an order of shrimp rolls and maybe some bbq pork and rice....The shrimps rolls are fresh and served with an AMAZING peanut sauce and a bowl of hot chllies. The Pho is always good.....my fav is shrimp wonton and egg noodle..and..as usual comes with bean sprouts and cilantro...side sauces include fish and a hot chillie... I limit myself to these choices because the portions are just right and I dont walk away from there feeling like I've eaten too much! Its fast and simple AND tastes GREAT... No-one seated outside on a cool evening by Bwana_Brown On Sunday night, our last one in town, we decided to check out another of the many restaurants in the ByWard Market area . We had read a review extolling the virtues of some of the Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa, so we wandered around until we found one that looked like it would suit us. It turns out that the Saigon Restaurant is one of the trendy places to eat in Ottawa and has great lunchtime specials. However, on a chilly Sunday evening in October, it was not very busy when we entered and were ushered to our table by a big and friendly waiter from Haiti (made sense - Vietnam and Haiti both have French connections!).
We were not totally famished, so asked to share our single order of an appetizer and a main course. There was no problem, so we ordered their C$4 Spring Rolls, which turned out to be a light crispy pastry stuffed with vermicelli, pork, carrots and onions (the vermicelli was made from shredded lettuce, mint leaves and carrots accompanied by Saigon fish sauce). For a main course, the C$14 Lemongras Woking sounded great - stir fried fresh seasonal vegetables mixed with spices, lemongrass and chunks of chicken. Our meal was washed down by two rounds of drinks, amber Saigon export beer ($5.50) for me and Australian Lindeman's house white ($5.25) for Sue as we enjoyed the ambiance and the wonderful flavours. I have not had all that many Vietnamese meals, but I'm liking what I taste so far! The waiter was very friendly and efficient and we had some good conversations with him, since things were not all that busy. With a generous tip, our meal came to C$55 (US$49). By the time we left our overnight stop in Drummondville, Quebec and sailed through Montreal, it was past noon when we finally checked into our accommodations in Ottawa. We had only eaten a continental breakfast, so were both feeling hungry by then. The front desk at Les Suites soon pointed us toward a couple of pub possibilities in the Byward Market area and, after a short stroll, we were quick to settle on the Scottish-themed Highland Pub, only about two blocks away. Although they have sidewalk seating along one side of their corner location in an old brick building, we decided to join the crowd inside and get comfortable. Service was quick and we soon had drinks in hand while we checked out the menu - an excellent pint of Scots Caledonia Premium Draught (C$6) in my case and a glass of the house chardonnay ($5) for Sue.
I wanted something with a bit of substance to it, so ordered their Scots Country-style chicken pot pie ($9). This dish consisted of "fire-grilled chicken, slowly simmered in a medley of vegetables and herbs, topped with a puff pastry and served with a market fresh garden salad". Sue's dish sounded interesting too, Feta cheese-stuffed mushroom caps ($8). The menu said this one consisted of "market fresh button mushrooms stuffed with Feta cheese, various peppers topped with three cheeses, oven baked and served with toasted garlic bread". As it turned out, my crust was so tough that I had to really bear down on a knife to make any headway, and the filling was lukewarm and not all that flavourful. I had a taste of one of Sue's mushroom caps and wished I had made a different choice. Background Scots music (including 'Farewell to Nova Scotia') playing during the meal helped me to get over my disappointment and I, at least, was not hungry any more! The waiter was good, so I gave him a decent tip, bringing the tab to C$37 (US$32). Leave a Comment
