Ottawa hosts over 60 festivals and events each year.
One of them - Ottawa Jazz Festival (OIJF) was founded in 1980 by local musicians who wanted to throw a summertime jazz festival to celebrate and develop the popular jazz scene in Ottawa.
Now celebrating its 30th year of consecutive programming, the Festival boasts the biggest loyal audience of any event in eastern Ontario.
The Ottawa Ferrari Fest is another must see event in the Capital and the best part of this is FREE. Once a year, Usually in June Ferrari owners gather on Preston Street during the day and later in the same day a Ferrari drag-race is taking place. There is another street near Preston which is blocked off from traffic and this is where they race up and down. Ferraris are Italian sports cars and since Ottawa has a large Italian community, Preston street is the place where they meet. Preston street is part of little Italy, also known as Via Marconi. Preston Street starts at Carling Ave and goes up to Wellington ST, downtown. Keep in mind owners don't like folks touching their cars on display, but take as many pictures as you wish. Some car owners open their hood, so you can also see the engines of these cars. An interesting day to spend in Ottawa.
The Ottawa Jazz Festival is a great time, relaxing, great way to spend an evening and listen to some great music. I thought the Lou Donaldson Quartet and the Jeff Healy Band where great.
Check out my travelogue for some more scenes from this festival.
I've never seen anything quite like this. Bleachers were assembled on Parliament Hill, music and narration were heard and spectacular shimmering lights and stunning giant projections were displayed on the Parliament Buildings. We couldn't take enough photographs.
The show is presented during the summer at 9:30 and again at 10:30 for a half an hour each. I understand the the shows change nightly.
There are many festivals in Ottawa during spring and summer. I've listed my favorites in my Link to Ottawa Festivals. To find out more... as there are a lot to choose from... go the Ottawa tourism site at http://www.ottawatourism.ca and click on events calendar.
